Want to Be Smarter? Play Video Games

We may have to put aside our image of video gamers as jobless nerds living in their parents’ basements, playing Warcraft till 3 in the morning in robe and slippers, surrounded by their beloved Star Wars action figures collection.

It now looks as though playing video games can help you develop key skills and, in fact, support brain function.

    Who knew?
Photos: In Pictures: 10 Games That Make Us Smarter

One of the most interesting and thoughtful people focusing on the benefits of gaming is Dr. Jane McGonigal, a game designer and passionate advocate for, in her words, “games that are designed to improve real lives and solve real problems.” In fact, McGonigal is the inventor and cofounder of SuperBetter, a game that over 100,000 people have used to tackle real-life health challenges like depression, anxiety, chronic pain, and traumatic brain injury.

McGonigal and others argue that playing video games can provide the following benefits:

    - They teach you how to think critically, how to solve problems. Dr. Alan Weiss, President and CEO, NCH Healthcare Systems, says “Being immersed in a video game…can encourage creative solutions and adaptations [which] can then be applied to real life situations. The results can be surprisingly positive for individuals, communities, and society as a whole.” If you think about it, even simple kids’ games involve a little of this – figuring out how to do things in a better or different way, how to come up with a solution that will make you the winner. Immersive video games can catalyze this fresh thinking in a much more powerful and 3-dimensional way.

    - They teach you collaboration skills. Especially now that web 2.0 has made real-time, worldwide gaming easy and cheap, group play is mushrooming at an astonishing rate. In order to be successful in multiplayer games, players need to form alliances, work together toward common ends, figure out how to pool their resources…just the skills you need to learn in real life in order to succeed with others.

    - They teach you how to fail. In a world that too often buffers kids from competition – where every kid who runs in a race gets a ribbon, and children are told they’ve done a good job even when they haven’t – video games have clear winners and losers. Winning teaches you how to win well (without gloating or getting arrogant) and losing teaches you how to lose well (without whining or blaming). It’s an important lesson – and research shows that we have more respect for people against whom we compete – no matter whether we win or lose.

    - They make you happy. This may seem both obvious and unimportant, but it actually circles back to the smartness argument. Dr. McGonigal says, “games make us happy because they are hard work that we choose for ourselves.” Another name for ‘hard work we choose for ourselves’ is mastery. When we work toward mastery, it stretches us – we go past our limitations, learn how to do new things….we get smarter.

So, next time you spend some time in Gnome Town or Star Wars: The Old Republic, don’t think of it as a waste of time…consider it brain food.

Playing games like COD also increases reflexes. I know this first hand. It also trains the eyes to better see any small inconsistency that could be another player.

Great! We will need all sorts of soldiers, snipers, heavy weaponry, support etc, tank drivers, dropship pilots, turret operators etc. I'm going to be a dropship pilot primarily, dropping off the crew at objectives.

think if you balance gaming with real life. You will become smarter

But if you game all the time and never interact with world in any form. You lose the abilities to communicate, enjoy, acknowledge and just be connected. Gaming is an escapism from reality, but you need reality to grow you're brain and adopt to any situation that needs a solution or solutions to resolve it. Also the right balance of gaming and real life, would make you smarter

    In my opinion

I've read something like this before. It's better than hearing "video games rot your brain"

Remember that i'm going to die is the best way I know to avoid trap of thinking you have something to lose, you're already naked, there's no reason not to follow your heart.

Games can definitely teach you useful things however it depends on the games you play. Some gives you knowledge and properties and some dont.

For his first point, I agree. Except, if you're playing a linear fps game like COD, then there really is not much room for problem solving because you just point and shoot, or use a grenade, which I wouldn't count as problem solving if you run out of ammo.

An RPG game like Fallout 3 or even Borderlands 2 teaches you to think critically. I remember in Fallout 3, I couldn't just go anywhere at a low level, I had to increase my XP, get better weapons and conserve a lot more stimpack, especially when dealing with Deathclaws. Or take Borderlands 2 for example. In this game, all the weapons at the store suck and are overpriced. I found that picking up weapons from locations and enemies are MUCH better than anything in the store. I maybe bought two-three weapons from the store and I'm at level 28 on single player with Zero. This game literally forces you to work your way around shitty items. Even the fact that some enemies are resistant to some elemental effects is great, because it forces you to think: ok, should I use a slag gun if he's resistant to fire, or should I use a corrosive gun. The slag does more damage if you switch weapons, but not if I use it only, but the corrosive gun will also do a lot of damage that is continuous, so I only have to fire a few bullets and let the damage eat away at his skin. I'm gonna use the corrosive-enabled gun. I hardly ever use slag unless I'm in a boss fight.

Basically, my point is, RPG games apply to his first point in the link more than any other genre. Hell, even Resident Evil 2 could work, because it's survival horror. Anything that requires you to DIY or makes you conserve items because it comes in extremely limited amounts, is a game that will make you smarter, like he says.

The FPS games are good for hand-eye coordination, that's for sure.

The amount of knowledge I've gained from playing video games has definitely been offset but the amount of brain cells I've killed chasing a good time.

Really though I can see how solving difficult puzzles and critical thinking in games helps in the real world. I'm a pretty confident and able person to begin with but sometimes I feel extra badass accomplishing something crazy in a game....something a room full of people tried and failed..
