I was happy to hear of a modern reboot until I read that Godawful short synopsis.
In one of the more unlikely reboots of recent years, Warner Bros has confirmed that Mortal Kombat will be getting a makeover, with a new adaptation of the classic videogame set to go into development.
Warner executive Lance Sloan confirmed that a new Mortal Kombat film is in the pipeline, while also revealing the kind of budget the project’s director will be working with.
“We're preparing right now for the film with Kevin Tancharoen, [who] directed the digital series for us," said Sloan. "He's at the helm of the forty, fifty million dollar film."
No firm details have been confirmed as yet, but word is the new film will follow a supermarket employee who discovers he has bizarre, otherworldly powers that lead him towards a pivotal choice between good and evil. And who hasn’t been there?
So long as there are some ludicrously gory fatalities on display, we’ll probably find ourselves taking a look. All together now… “FINISH HIM!”

Fucking finally! This will be epic, especially considering that it's been taken care of by none other than the director of the Mortal Kombat mini series!

I was so happy, almost crying in excitement when I read the title..and then I read this part:
WHY? WHY? WHY? That sounds retarded, I can't wrap my head around that. I could write a better premise than that.he new film will follow a supermarket employee who discovers he has bizarre, otherworldly powers that lead him towards a pivotal choice between good and evil.
My version: Jax goes undercover in an underground fighting club, where he meets Shang Tsung, who gives him Kano and the Black Dragon Clan if he participates in Mortal Kombat.
It's almost exactly like the short film in 2010, but it's so much better than someone in a supermarket. WTF.

The only reason I can even tolerate the first MK movie is because they sort of got the vibe/atmosphere of the game right, plus the character costumes on Sub-Zero and Scorpion. But it was still missing the blood and gore. All you had were lines from the games given to the actors to shout. Still not as satisfying as showing the action of Sub-Zero ripping the spine out of another character.
I mean, the first or second MK game gave birth to the ERSB rating system because of its violence and gore. And some asshole named Paul WS Anderson fucks it up. How do you not include blood and gore in an MK movie?
My expectations for this reboot are very high. I'm not expecting some Christopher Nolan stuff, but I'm expecting it to be like the live action Youtube series, only better because it has a high budget.

I remember seeing a trailer for this over a year ago but haven't heard anything about it until now.
Looking forward to it for sure. Big MK fan here.

That's true, but consider this: The generation MK came out in are all adults now. I think they'd be easily able to pull off an r-rating and good production value with an r-rated budget. They wouldn't need a lot of CGI either since it's mostly fighting and a tiny bit of special moves like in the games, but more emphasis on the fighting.
Or they could give it an even higher budget with an R-rating like Prometheus.

This has been in talks for like 5 years. I'm guessing the popularity of the recent game made it happen.

This... is my BOOMSTICK!
