Square Enix merger a "complete failure" says former Square boss

Hisashi Suzuki took to Twitter to trash the company for having "no vision"

Square Enix recently posted losses and lowered forecasts across the board. Sleeping Dogs shipped 1.5 million units, but it wasn't enough to bolster the publisher's bottom line, and former management seems to have lost faith in the company's ability. Former Square Co. boss Hisashi Suzuki commented on Twitter that the merger of Square Enix back in 2003 has been a "complete failure."

He added in his own disappointment with the current management, saying, "There's no vision for the future."

Suzuki pointed out that the total value of Square Enix as a publicly traded company has still not been able to exceed the value of the publisher before the merger. He noted the high development costs which have been dragging Square Enix down, but hopefully the publisher will get some relief in that area soon, as it recently signed a long-term deal with Epic to use Unreal Engine 3 and 4.

Suzuki was president of Square from 2000 to 2002, and he was intimately familiar with the merged company, having served as director at Square Enix from 2003 to 2005. He is now a director at Sega.

hey, I'm all in favor of the unreal engine and personally I like when that engine is used. hopefully we will get a lot more RPG's out there and sandboxes.

It is true that the merger was bad for Square Enix. Their overall quality dropped. The best merger they did was with, Eidos which in comparison pulls quality titles.

Well they bought Eidos rather than merge with them and yes that was good for SE but tbh Eidos would be pumping out the decent games anyway.

Also at least Sega has released games worth playing in the past few years.

Interesting.

The only game worth your while is Yakuza, other than that Sega almost entirely relies on third-party support (e.g. Aliens: Colonial Marines by Gearbox) or focuses on niche titles.

And of course you'll see the yearly Hedgehog game if that's what you're into.

Sonic Generations was decent and a step in the right direction for the franchise but SquareEnix has put out better games when compared to Sega.

Vanquish and Valkirya Chronicles are two of this gen's best. You wouldn't be able to tell through their sales though.

Game taste in the west is pretty much shit.

Yes. For the most part, the games have been utter shyte and their ability to deliver actual Final Fantasy games have been deeply hampered with all the fluff and rehashes they keep spewing out. They haven't been just a little bit bad since the merger, they have been god frikken awful!
