The PS3 has a SATA150 controller. The SATA 3.0 is backwards compatible though.

So is the SATA III 6.0GB controller. You will be limited to SATA I 1.5GB speeds though so I'd save the few euros and just get SATA II or find SATA I.

Yeah as said, it's compatible but will be bottle necked. Same as my laptop, I bought a 6.0 GB/s SSD when I inevitably upgrade to a laptop with a 6.0GB/s slot though and it didn't cost that much more anyway.

3.5 inch SATA 3 are about the same price as SATA 2 because SATA 3 is becoming the standard.
Not sure how many 2.5inch SATA3 mechanical drives there are I have not seen any for sale.

My 2.5" SSD that I bought in the summer is SATA 3 but my laptop only has SATA II, still a big difference in speed though. Won't be going back to HDDs after using one now either.

I know, right? I've had and SSD drive for my desktop PC for a couple years now and at one time, I even had two in a raid-0 setup and it was blazing fast.

I have a raid 0 on my desktop with two ssd drive's. I also have this application called turbo boost and it fly's along, problem is it keeps the AC power on so I've had to disable it.

They will work but not at the higher spec speeds of SATA 3.

no, the benefits won't be there other than some decreased install time and maybe some loading... in some cases it actually doesn't perform better in either of those two areas.

Are we talking about HDDs or SSDs for the SATA 3? SSDs improve pretty much all load times, 7200rpm HDDs however sometimes (very rarely) actually increase load times rather than decrease them.

I think the 2.5 inch (laptop) SATA 3 drives are only SSD. There are plenty of 3.5 inch (desktop) drives for sale that are mechanical.

Just for the sake of it, there were tests done a while back and the ssd improvements were sporadic an only on certain games for installation and loading. However, in game, they don't do squat for benefits.
