The traits making up an RPG can be mixed into other genres. I would consider Dishonored and Borderlands 2 as RPGs since leveling up, looting, gaining XP, and selecting class/character workshop are a pillar of the gameplay.

Thanks for reminding me of Dragon's Dogma, though. I honestly forgot about it. I'll be changing that.

To be fair, I kinda thought this year was rather meh. I chose a GoTY because there was a 'best of the bunch' for me, but if I were to apply some critical quality to the title of GoTY, then I would state that no game this year really deserves it. I really haven't been too impressed by any of the released titles.

I almost forget about it, since it was released in May, but Max Payne 3 really was one of those stand-out games. Mindblowing in every aspect. Persona 4 can easily take it from any other game though. Great story, tons of hours of fun gamplay, etc. Journey was an incredibly unique experience, and I think video games as a medium benefited from its release, but I just can't give it GOTY. I mean, what if someone played it single player? It's not nearly as poignant an experience.

I've seen many share your opinion. I on the other hand thought it was pretty good. Nothing breakthrough but solid. Only really creative big title was Dishonored. Although, I enjoyed many games this year. Darksiders 2, Borderlands 2, Far Cry 3, Dishonored, Mass Effect 3, and more. Overall I think it has been a stellar year but just my opinion.
