John Carmack: "a lot of next-gen games will still target 30 FPS"

Although the next generation consoles known to be in the works at Sony and Microsoft are expected to bring a significant jump in processing power, and subsequently have the capability to push out higher frame-rates and screen resolutions, it's uncertain how important these factors will be to publishers and developers of next gen games.

id Software veteran and technical programming legend John Carmack seems to think that higher frame-rates won't be a priority for most titles, responding on Twitter with "unfortunately, I can pretty much guarantee that a lot of next gen games will still target 30 fps."

Carmack's comment mirrors our own expectations, as we anticipate publishers to use the extra cycles on pumping out more polygons, higher resolution textures, and rendering effects at the good-enough frame rate of 30, rather than doubling down for a smooth 60.

By the same token, we expect to see a lot of next-gen console games sticking to 720p, rather than sacrificing resources to hit 1080p, let alone the mythical 4K resolutions the next PlayStation is rumoured to be capable of outputting.

Games such as the Call of Duty series, and id Software's RAGE have targeted 60 FPS on current generation consoles, but they are few and far between, with 30 FPS viewed as acceptable for most titles.

Fortunately, fans of 60 frames per second on PC hardware will still always be able to throw more money at their rig for smooth and delightful gameplay.

Pretty much what I've been saying. Well, I'd expect to see more games in 1080p but 4K is definitely a stretch, in my opinion.

Not surprised. I have a feeling that the next consoles wont be the quantum leap in power that people are expecting. At least not to the degree thats being expected.

Yeah I'd rather have proper 720p with more detail, effects, etc. than 1080p with less of those things.

Lol I don't get into these types of discussion, but I must ask what have been proper 720p games is Uncharted 2 one?

Also I'm guessing one of the only proper 1080p games is Wipeout HD/Fury right?

1080 standard and no exceptions. I don't care if the framerate is at 30 or if there's less detail in the scene.

they definitely will from what i've been reading - especially from certain posters who have previously been in the know.

Certain suppose Tech Demo's I've seen while good they don't look like that big a leap over PS3.

Plus 1080p is no deal breaker for me I mean the graphics might be great, but if there is no game to those graphics it won't matter.

A dam shame to be honest. Personally I FEEL that it shouldnt be too much at all to get proper 1080p 30fps at least with the way tech has advanced, though considering the nature of consoles, despite their optimizations this would seem so. F×k the world.

if 30fps gives me a GTA or Saints Row where traffic doesn't just pop into / out of view as i'm driving/flying or disappear when i turn in a circle... then i'll happily take 30fps.

Lol yeah that's true I still have yet to play Saints Row 3, but I have been waiting for that to happen with GTA games.

I'm kind bummed out by the idea it'll be mainly 30 but at least make it 1080p

"duh" lol. It makes total sense that they'd shoot for 30fps to maximize graphical gains.

It's always been like this... Except in those rare occasions where 60fps is deemed a priority for a particular game. Often genres- like fighters.

Wipeout HD, yeah. But the graphics in that game are pretty clean. No extra post-processing or whatever that would slow it down.

GT5 from what I remember kept shifting depending on the resolution it was set in.
