ModNation Racers: Is the multiplayer still active?

Hey everyone.

I've been eyeballing ModNation Racers as a game to add to my fledgling PS3 library. My wife and I in college played the hell out of Mario Kart, and the game appears friendly enough for my young boy, so this is really drawing my attention.

Before I dig in the sofa for the change needed to buy a copy...

1) Is there still a multiplayer community or will it be near impossible to get multiplayer games going this many years after release.

2) If I were to pick up a used copy at the local game store, will I need an online pass, or was this released before the money grab?
