haven't been on for a while as PC been down and have now treated myself to a laptop, but now back to the post i am interested in to see what every bodies surprise game of last year i myself was surprised by the book of spells as how it managed to get my girlfriend so engrossed and she loved every minute of it even though she moaned at the end of chapter test but she kept going and finished the first chapter and she determined to finish it, then i may be allowed to have a go with it myself

surprise game of 2012!!!!!

Mine would have to be Final Fantasy XIII-2. Seriously. I loved XIII, but it was also a major disappointment to myself for being so different and separate from other FF entries. XIII-2 did get back a lot of that FF feel from other entries, although the story and plot was a huge, convoluted mess where everything was explained with a paradox.
Still, can't wait for the 3rd!

For me it was Spec Ops. A game that I showed no interest in whatsoever and marked as some generic military shooter. I was pleasantly surprised by it when I got it dirt cheap in a bundle. Not at all what I was expecting to say the least.

Hmm...
Borderlands 1/2. I say these because I doubt I'd ever had play them if the first wasn't on PS+ and my cousin was over. It seemed like something even he could play. After the first session it was love at first sight. I'm currently working on the second now.I talk to myself because I'm the only one whose answers I accept.

Same.
I saw all the low scores it got and all the hate. I had pre-ordered it so decided to give it a shot anyway, I usually don't follow reviews anymore. I think most of them are garbage.
I actually got enjoyment out of the game. Not enough to warrant a second playthrough, but I had fun nevertheless. Good game. Not the best RE by any means, but a good game IMO.__________

Well, I was shocked by the original Mass Effect 3 ending and it certainly made me realize how invested I was in the story and characters. Was really happy about the extended cut.
I don't think it's a 2012 game, but I got Saints Row the Third in the humble bundle and I love it. It's good to see a game that focuses on giving you a good time over everything else. Also I'm impressed by some of the action sequences. They have some serious Uncharted level stuff going on in that game.

Dragon's Dogma. I knew it would be awesome. but still,i was surprised with how much
I had no intentions of becoming a leader. It is as a warrior how I shall be remembered, but these are hardly numbers worth dying for.

Overall I was blown away by Far Cry 3. I knew many of the games of 2012 would live up to expectations in my eyes. I saw Borderlands 2, Darksiders 2, FF XIII-2 (imo to be great), and ME 3 to be great. I didn't expect Far Cry 3 to suck me in so much and make me want to play a game again for hours on end without stopping. The game truly was amazing and wasn't expecting even close to that after much of the talk of mediocrity from FC2.

Dishonored - amazingly rich and deep world and top notch gameplay
Sleeping Dogs - Still playing and it's freaking amazing
Journey - Can't even describe the experience

"Spec Ops: The Line" was a big surprise for me, a guy who isn't really into shooters. The whole approach was unique and fun.
My biggest surprise would have to be "Lollipop Chainsaw", mainly because I was ridiculously-overhyped for it, and it wound up exceeding what I expected. It's just my kinda game, I guess.
Shut up and play games

Two PC games for me.
FTL - Faster Than Light: Such a simple concept and not really much to look at, but hugely playable. Addictive.
Diablo III: Got masses of stick for the early release problems and how the game has been changed from it's old formula. However, since I didn't get it until a few months later and haven't played the first two; I'm enjoying it immensely. It has re-ignited my passion for A-RPG games.

Dishonored for me. Very unique game.
I went to rent NFS wanted but they didn't have it in so I ended up grabbing Dishonored and thought it was great. Bit of a surprise.

I would have to go with Dragons Dogma. Its the first Capcom game i have bought in years. I am really hoping they bring out a follow up. It would be third on my list for best game of 2012 after Mass Effect 3 and Borderlands 2
