http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2013/01/...lays-4k-video/Uh oh. NVidia have just upset the apple cart and have announced a brand new portable console at CES.
The “Shield” runs on pure Android (without any bloatware) and will play games from Google’s own Store alongside a special NVIDIA TegraZone store – Shield runs off a Tegra 4, with 72 cores, with battery life of 5-10 hours.
It’s easily the most powerful mobile console (by a mile) and can play 4K videos and even drive a 4K TV set, making it well and truly future proof.
It’s got a proper controller shape, has a 5 inch 720p screen (with 294ppi Retina-like display) with multitouch. It even has Micro SD support, HDMI out, USB etc.
It’s a monster. It’s out Q2

That thing is sexy as all fuck.
I'd use the HDMI instead, though. The screen looks awkward.-No Feeble Cheering-

This video shows the console streaming a game from a PC and outputting the video to a 4k TV. Project Shield can also play Android video games without an internet connection.

I just saw this on Kotaku this morning, anyone check out the specs of the Tegra 4 processor? It's insane!
http://kotaku.com/5973644/oh-yeah-nv...bile-processor
I know from a PC standpoint it is not impressive, but for a mobile processor this thing is a beast!

Damn man the specifications are indeed very impressive! Now you understand why I said that Vitas specs were bad? However it looks like holding it is very uncomfortable.

Price permitting.
I'm more interested in it being able to Stream games from Steam. The gadget freak inside of me is demanding one but at the same time i'm failing to see the point. The problem with games being made specifically for android is that there are so many different hardware combinations that I can't see many games taking full advantage of the Tegra 3 yet alone the Tegra 4 (as i type this i know i am basically talking about PC gaming as well)
But with this and Ouya (shame they can't get Tegra4 inside of that little box of wonders) really trying to push gaming on the Android platform it is going to be a very exciting place in a few years that's for sure.
I agree, it does look quite cumbersome so it will be interesting to see how it shapes up next to the other every day items such as iPhones, Samsung Galaxy S3, iPad/mini, Nexus 7, 3DS and Vita.
Price and support are going to be the defining factors for me though.
Under £200 and it's putting itself into impulse territory. Any more than that though and it's going to be difficult to sway me to buy it. I already own an iPhone, iPad and a gaming laptop. It really needs to set itself apart from just being another thing taking space up in my bag.

Yeah it is going to be interesting but then it brings back to my point of I have my collection of Steam games on both my desktop and laptop. I'm not sure what time I would want to use this over my laptop. Maybe in bed as I don't like using my laptop in my bed.
You nailed it though. The tegra 4 should be powerful enough to be able to emulate Gamecube games at least so it would get a lot of use as a portable emulator.I Like Games.

I can see myself laying down on a couch and playing Borderlands 2 or Skyrim easily.. I'd play more games if devs WERE TO IMPLEMENT PROPER AIM ASSIST FOR GAMEPADS IN THEIR @#$@%@^ GAMES. For instance, they advertise Battlefield 3 as part of the "supported" line up for this device- but I own it on PC and I can tell you for a fact that using a controller without any kind of aim assist is going to get your ass devastated online.
Hopefully they will fix some of this.
Also, I did some digging on this.. And I have some bad news (well not for me). Part of the reason the streaming tech is possible with the claimed delay time of roughly an HD TV (meaning you won't be able to tell you're streaming your game from your PC via WiFi) is due to some of the goodies they've packed into their GTX 600 series, namely H.264 video compression and streaming on the fly from within the GPU.
Nvidia is putting together a special software package that isn't just a typical "screen sharing" service. So this device will marry perfectly to your PC for content so long as you have a GTX 650 or above.
Min requirements:
GTX 650
i5 Intel CPU (or equiv, I think)
Windows 7 or above.
I got a GTX 670 FTW edition, so I'm ok.. But alot of people on the 500 series GPU's won't be able to use this awesome little device.Last edited by Vulgotha; 01-07-2013 at 21:49.

Looks like someone took an old Xbox controller and slapped it to a screen taken from the headrest of my vehicle....

The design is not that good ( controller with a small screen, looks like a hassle to carry) IMO and i don't like the way it looks, but the specs are pretty amazing and i like the streaming from the PC for any steam title thing, sounds promising.
If it can get good backing and if it gets games that are made for it I could be interested in buying it.
Does it do other things than gaming, like web browsing etc?

Looks like the stream feature is the only reason why people may buy this console.

About the steam streaming, i heard you have to be close to the PC to do this, which makes it like remote play, not really that good to be honest.

Is it not over a wifi collection? If that's true that is quite poor.
I'm interested to see if the streaming technology is as good as the Wii UI Like Games.

another console, why now and not when the PS3 and Xbox 360
they could of at least competed with them two powerful consoles... The only people that will buy this, is the ones that are into P.C spec's and gaming

What does this mean? They can release a new console whenever they want. The technology wasn't there to release when the PS3/360 were released so now it is available they release it now.
It's a handheld games machine... Are you saying Sony have pitted the Vita and Nintendo the 3DS agaisnt the home consoles?they could of at least competed with them two powerful consoles... The only people that will buy this, is the ones that are into P.C spec's and gaming
I don't think PC gamers will be buying this, not many anyway - it serves no point. People wanting an Android gaming device will buy this.I Like Games.
