Intel has released several 8 and 10 core cpu's.

Not physical cores though. I hardly call virtualization technology and hyper threading technology as cores. (Mind you, I could be wrong and if that's the case, I'd like to see their 8 physical cores)

AMD does have 12 and 16 core CPUs out for the server market.

Do you really think I would make a mistake like that?

    Yes physical cores.

    Look at their xeon lineup.

Cool. Thanks. Do the "i" series have 8 physical cores too or is just the the Xeon processors? I know that AMD has 8 physical cores for not only the Opterons but the AM3+ processors as well.

Intel's consumer line tops out at 6 cores.

speaking of xeon, durango alpha kits had intel xeons, 16GB RAM and high end 7xxx series GPUs in them.

I would provide an actual quote from a dev on gaf but I'm not going through that giant thread again

I'm sick of all these rumors(tho interesting). I'm ready to see some fucking games and to know how much power is dedicated to gaming and other features(I won't give a shit about)
No thank you. I'll be gaming on a stronger console for $100 cheaper instead

Sony trolled MS. PS4 fans didn't do it. We just laughed at MS and anyone getting mad. $399 FTW!

Not necessarily. Gabe commented on Win8 being shitty for gaming, so there could be some issues with that.

Thats got nothing to do with making games. Its to do with getting games "certified" for the windows 8 store.

Sounds very much like it will be the IBM Power 7 chip (8 cores with 4 threads per core). Very nice if so. It's a kick ass processor.

Depends how you define "core". The new AMD chips (Bulldozer, Piledriver) have modules, and each module contains 2 integer execution units, and a shared FPU and shared L2 cache, instruction decoder, dispatch unit. This sharing of execution units is how Intel's hyper-threading also works. An 8 "core" AMD chip has 4 modules. A 16 "core" Opteron has 8 modules.

    Meanwhile a Power 7 has 8 cores..period...

Does any one truley think they will throw BC out the window, and not go with a Power 7?

With 4 threads per core for a total of 32 threads

Interestingly, MS best practice for the Xbo360 was to completely ignore the threads.
They suggested just treating the machine as a three core CPU, and if you "must" use it for very very short bursts of threading.

Not gonna get hyped up by any of these specs until confirmed (and even then until launched - see PS3's 4 HMI ports).

But promising that they should at least be concerend with RAM etc as imo "true" open world games would be key to showcase nextgen capability.
As much as I love games, I could never spend the same amount of time in a place where I hate/look down on, and continue to post and participate.

I think the cores in the Xbox 360 were the same as the PPE in the Cell processor. In which case they didn't have many execution units to begin with, and no out-of-order execution. So it makes sense that less threads were better. Power 7 has a good number of execution units and out-of-order execution.
