Next-Gen: Xbox 720 Will Be More Powerful Than PS4 - Report

Hmm very different from what VG247 is reporting, but non the less, alot of this info in this article has been some what leaked through insiders on Neogaf and Beyond3d forums.

The next-gen console wars kicks off early as insider claims the Xbox 720 will outperform the PS4 quite considerably.

As part of an insider reveal - with numerous technical details on the Xbox 720 and PS4 spotted - a developer has claimed that the Xbox Next will be considerably more powerful than the PS4.

The tech specs of both the PS4 and the Xbox 720 are quite telling of where next-gen might take us, and the insider claims that Sony is looking to target 4K resolutions for its TV market while Microsoft is intending to target complex ray tracing lighting technology.

    Next-gen Espionage

As part of the reveal, the insider confirmed that both consoles will be "a big jump" on what we have now, and that quite a lot of next-gen espionage has gone on as both console manufacturers try to compete with one another.

Sony caught wind of Microsoft's dual SOC (System On Chip) technology, and countered it by increasing the RAM to 8GB as well as improving the GPU.

However, Microsoft has since reacted to that by adding in a third SOC into the Xbox 720 - resulting in what the developer refers to as "three computers in one".

    The Differences Between PS4 & Xbox 720

The insider was asked about whether this three SOC system will cause issues for developers, questioning whether it could prove as difficult as the PS3's Cell chip to develop for.

On paper both systems are capable of 3.2TFlops of data, however the Oban blitter inside the Xbox 720 increases the speed at which data is transferred, meaning the Xbox Next is actually capable of 4.2TFlops.

The inclusion of EDRAM, too, means that a lot of data is shared between the three chips.

"We all feel Omni is more of a pc in it design," claims the insider, "Or more off the shelf than Durango."

He adds that Durango - or Xbox 720, or Xbox Next - has a more "modded design" which includes a better bus, higher memory speeds and extra rendering tech.

"I'd look at Durango as high level-PC and Omni as a medium setting PC," says the insider.

PS4 Vs Xbox 720: Image Quality

Though Sony is targeting 4K resolution capabilities, it seems the PS4 won't actually be able to generate the resolution native and will instead upscale.

"The thing about Omni," says the insider, "is it will upscale to 4K but the IQ [Image Quality] is very low in regards to Durango."

He adds that a higher resolution doesn't equate to a better image quality. He does claim that third-party games will be able to scale easily across the Wii U, Xbox 720 and Omni, however adds that "first party games and some third party will look amazing on Durango no doubt.

"You will see a big difference."

Later on the insider is quizzed on the ability to port games from the PC to each of the consoles, to which he replies that the Xbox 720 is no different "to developing for 360. The tools are highly-developed to handle the system."

He then adds, "And the first time you see xbox IQ you will know... The winner."

Microsoft Has Spent More Developing The Xbox 720

According to the insider, Microsoft has a "massive budget" for developing the Kryptos project and the result is the Oban blitter, a microprocessor that increases the speed at which data is transferred through the system.

Discussing the Oban and CPU setup, the insider claims "It's 384bit and has 550gb/s it was designed to enhance the system for ray tracing and other memory heavy rendering engines.

"Oban is the game changer for MS. You all will see very soon with your own eyes and ears."

The insider is the posed the question on whether the three SOCs will cause trouble for Microsoft, and in fact make it harder to develop for than Sony's single SOC system.

"It would be hard to achieve if it was not for Oban design," he says, adding "I have heard Starsha kits have very bad heating problems due to the GPU and SOC not being specialised enough.

"I think that has come down to sony not having enough money to invest in R&D."

The insider then claims that the Oban/Venus blitter and SOC setup has been in development for two years by Microsoft, IBM and AMD.

"And also a lot of people are comparing Starsha and Kryptos by saying that Starsha is more powerful, well it's because you are comparing them to early SDK. Sony Starsha has been in final SDK since December."

Xbox 720 Will Have Better Multiplatform Games Than PS4

Though in many ways the two systems are comparable, the insider is adamant that the Xbox 720 will be better overall than the PS4.

"Every multiplatform or third party game will look better on Xbox Next," claims the insider, adding that even first party games on the Xbox 720 "will look better then other company's offerings."

Because of the Oban parts inside the console, the insider says the Xbox Next will stay current.

He then answers the question over memory. The PS4 has 8GB of memory, as does the Xbox 720 - however 1GB of that Xbox Next's RAM will be used only for the operating system to power features such as in-game video Skype chat.

The insider is the questioned again on the limitations of having three SOCs inside the Xbox 720, and how it could pose an issue for multiplatform games on the console.

"The 2xVenus and 1xMars are designed with Oban controllers. These SOC can work together. But they do not need crossfire.

"Porting is not a problem. Porting pc games would be a lot easIer this time. Any part of the engine code can be sent to any CPU core or GPU DSP [digital signal processor], it's very open due to the blitter."

"We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that (developers) want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so then the question is, what do you do for the rest of the nine-and-a-half years?"

If this is true, than the post I made yesterday has some validity to it. But most of what is being said in the article is somewhat being discussed via insiders on beyond3d and Gaf. But we won't know until we know, but it leaves good discussion

Tech specs, release dates, power consumption, hardware capabilities

Here is some additional info which again falls inline with what is being leaked.

Tech specs, release dates, power consumption, hardware capabilities and more for Xbox 720 and PS4 revealed by insider.

    Published on Jan 17, 2013

Rumours surrounding the Xbox 720 and the PS4 are coming thick and fast these days - all part of the exciting build up to next-gen, naturally - but the latest tech specs revealed by an insider could be the most detailed yet.

An industry insider - it's not clear if they are a developer or someone else - has revealed a number of specific details about both the PS4 and the Xbox 720.

Though these things should always be taken with a pinch of salt until something official is announced, the technicality and sheer wealth of the information certainly makes them sound convincing - especially when they collaborate so many previous rumours.

We'll include a technical glossary at the bottom of the page should you need to understand all acronyms.
    Sony's PS4 won't be capable of native 4K resolution

According to the insider, the PS4 (or Omni) won't be capable of the proposed 4K resolution that new TVs are being developed for. "The thing about omni is it will upscale to 4K" claims the insider, adding that the image quality is "very low in regards to Durango [Xbox 720]".

PS4 is having problems with overheating

Though the insider does not seem to have seen the issues himself, he does mention that he had heard others claim that the "Starsha [dev] kits have very bad heating problems" because the GPU and the SOC aren't specialised enough - as is the case wit the Xbox 720.

He then adds that he believes it is because Sony doesn't have enough money to devote to research and development, as it had done with the PS3's Cell processor.

The PS4 will be called "Omni" and is in production soon

Throughout the reveal the insider refers to Sony's PS4 with two names: Starsha and Omni. Starsha has been revealed as the name of the APU system inside the PS4.

However, Omni is now believed to be the final name of the PS4. This was a rumour back in November 2012, and was said to represent Sony's approach to the console - namely, that it is capable of doing everything.

The insider claimed that the final SDK for Sony's PS4 - or Omni - has been available since December 2012, adding that Sony is trying to launch its next-gen console ahead of Microsoft.

The Starsha chipset is in fabrication process now, and is expected to enter mass production on the 23rd of January.

As a point of interest, the insider claimed that Microsoft has only just got the Kryptos (Xbox 720) out to developers at the start of this month.

If true, the rumours suggesting that Sony's next-gen console will launch as early as September 2013 could well be true. Along these lines, the insider claimed that Sony could reveal the PS4 on 5 Feb 2013.

Xbox 720's "Oban" is a game changer for Microsoft

The name Oban was revealed a couple of months back, and was believed to be the name of the chips onboard the Xbox 720.

According to this insider, however, Oban is actually the name of the blitter inside the next-gen machine.

A blitter is a system built into hardware designed to improve the speed at which data is transferred within the hardware's memory. It is a separate system from the CPU and can run parallel to it, moving large amounts of data relatively quickly.

The Xbox 720 will be a 356-bit system - compared to the PS4's 256-bit system - and is capable of 550GB of data per second.

The insider claims it is designed for raytracing, and with the Oban and the higher bus speed of the GPU this will put it on top in terms of technical prowess.
Xbox 720 is designed for ray tracing technology

Ray tracing is a high-end lighting technology that isn't widely used in games today. Unlike the current dynamic lighting system - which recreates the effects of lighting - ray tracing emulates the science of light.

In other words, more realistic reflections and refractions can be created to create more realistic looking lighting.

The problem is it's a very intensive technology that takes a very long time to render and is primarily used in Pixar films. If the Xbox 720 is as powerful as this suggests, then ray tracing will be more possible with the hardware.

    PS4 Tech Specs

    4GB of GDDR5 RAM.
CPU is an x86 system with 256-bit bus.
A more off the shelf design than the modded Xbox 720. "We all feel Omni is more of a pc in it design."
    Capable of 3.2TFlops of data.

    Xbox 720 Tech Specs

Three SOCs in one console. Two "Venus" models, and one "Mars".
8GB RAM, with 1GB devoted to operating system.

    Next-Gen PS4 & Xbox 720 Tech Glossary

APU = Accelerated Processing Unit. A hardware system that includes an additional method of processing. In this case, a CPU with a GPU built in.
CPU = Central Processing Unit. The primary processing function of a machine.
GPU = Graphics Processing Unit. The system used to process and generate the visuals of a game.
SOC = System On Chip. A method of combining all the processing functions (CPU, GPU, etc) onto a single chip. Largely used for mobiles and tablets, but increasingly popular for consoles.
Omni = One of the proposed final names for the PS4.
Starsha = The rumoured name of the chips on board the PS4.
Thebes = The internal codename for the PS4.

The insider claims that Microsoft has designed the Xbox 720 with ray tracing in mind, however admits that "the hardest part will be for studios to work with ray traced graphics enabled engines."

Starsha?! Sounds like a hermaphroditic pornstar!

Good find though, looks interesting! I hope in the end neither system will use power bricks though, I HATE those things with a passion!

    I'll repost the actually leak...

Insider Daily. More Xbox Next Specs. PS4 specs detailed. 3.2T with 8gb of RAM and full HSA

    я
    misterxmedia
    January 16th, 23:20

    Misterxmedia: That is a system!

Well, it was almost the same as we dag ...there is gonna be 3x SOCs...Will it be hard to port from PC to Xbox Next? Will it be the current situation with multiplatform on 360 and ps3 but only vise versa(180 degree oposite)?
Insider: But omni is still a big jump... It has an

Apu with a fast gpu.. 4 gig of ddr3 and very much the same gddr5 ram.. Cpu cores are x86 but the bus is 256bit/ not 384bit like xbox next.. And only the main gup is full hsa.. 3.2tf console both console use stacking .. But xbox next has an extra venus soc and -alot of edram shared between chips.. We all feel -omni is more of a pc in it design .. Or more of the shelf then durango.. As durango has more modded design .better buss higher memory speeds and extra rendering tech .. Id look at durango as high level -pc and omni as a medium setting pc..
The thing about omni is it will upscale to 4k but the iq is very low in regards to durango. More res dont equal better I.Q. I can see games will scale across wii/xbox/omni with ease. But first party games and some 3rd party will look amazing on durango no doubt you will see a big difference.

But sony has some good dev tools but ms is just more developed.

Insider: And knowing the industry campers on forms ... Lets clear this up!!
Microsoft has massive budget for there Kryptos Project..

And like I have said these "SOC" are only based on Pc gpus buy name and basic specs.. These are not the type of hardware you can purchase at your store.

A lot of money has been invested into these chips.. Power tdp and cooling has been the main factors in there design But also wafer density 28nm chip sizes.

The mars system "SOC" is running @600mhz there is an audio dsp on this chip and a 4 core cpu.. It has 4 cores 1 thread per core. And runs @ 1.8 ghz.. This chip does not run hot its all most identical to the wii u.. But due to the nature of the 8850 gpu. Which is not the same as the pc counter part .. Its gflops is close to 650. This chip has access to the edram and main system ram which is 4gbs of ddr4.

Now the application / real hardware .. Is based on a
venus a dual gpu design. But these are costume designed.. Also not your standard pc part.

Each venus soc ..contains a 4 core cpu which has 4 threads per core. These are clocked @ 2.4ghz.
The gpus are 800mhz with 1.5gbs of gddr5 ram clocked @ 1.2ghz. They are not clocked as high as there pc counter parts. Hense there not of the shelf parts. And do not need the tdp ether.

There gpu each have 1.2tf each. Now each chip has a hardware dsp for rendering future engines that are not possible on pc at this time.. and a hardware blitter
. Which has access to the edram and system memory.

The mars soc uses 40/70 watts
The venus are 80/110watts the external power is 300watts but we are using 230watts or that is what we believe system draw is. Or the hardware techs suggested when we spoke.

Now on paper the whole sdk is around 3.2tf. but with the blitter and dsp the system can produce around 4.2ft on paper.. Which is the second fastest chip even fast performance then starsha. As that is all most identical soc but except it has one higher clocked 8970 gpu.. No blitter no edram and the memory bus is 256bit. Starsha gddr is also 256bit. Starsha is a 3.2tf console. Hence ms design change in december 2012. They changed to
2x venus 9850 spec soc with gddr5 when it was found that sony had updated there design to have more faster ram and gpu. Also the soc in starsha is an 8 core jaguar at 2.0ghz.. But it has two threads per-core.

    Like i have said starsha
or thebes is still a massive jump... now oban is not inside starsha .. Oban is the name of the blitter and buss chip that controls the 3x soc in kryptos. Its 384bit and has 550gb/s it was designed to enhance the sysyem for ray tracing and other memory heavy rendering engines "ray tracing" Starsha main design is 4k gaming.. But it will not have special hardware for ray tracing. The reason behind such different
    Between the two console company's
Is sony as a whole company need the omni to drive there tv sector 4k tv's 8k but Starsha can not drive iq at 4k or 8k with the iq that 1080p or 2k will have. Yes there is up-scale. Oban is the game changer for ms. You all will see very soon with your own eyes and ears.

MIsterxmedia: so, I see difficulties to achieve 4.2T performance on 2xSOC on Xbox rather than 3.2T on 1 SOC of PS4 in multiplatform games. Is that true? Porting problems ahead for xbox? Xbox will use only 1SOC because 1SOC will be on PS4 and PC or it will scale automatically to 2xSOC on xbox
    Insider: starsha = 3.2tf and kryptos 4.2
It would be hard to -archive if it was not for oban design ..

I have heard starsha kits have very bad heating problems due to the gpu + soc not being specialize enough.. I think that has come down to sony not having enough money to invest in rnd.
But fanboy only want to hear what they want to hear.. And pc master race also..
The xbox360 is 8 year old tech.
A lot has happen in the tech word.
With soc design ms.ibm.amd have worked on this design for over two years now.. Oban/venus. they have included bte cpu enabled gpus.. With hsa vte.
There is so much to say but id rather people wait and see it with there own eyes.
I would never say that the gpus are 100% there pc counterparts.
They are modified. And each console has its own power and heat level.. that is why iv said this is not off the shelf hardware well starsha is but only with the gpu.

And also a lot of people are comparing starsha and kryptos by saying that starsha is more powerful well its because you are comparing them to early sdk. Sony
Starsha has been in final sdk since december.. As ms only just got kryptos out to dev at the start of this month.. Omni is in fab right now as Sony are trying to lunch ahead of of ms xbox next, which is going to mass production on the 23th of this month.

Misterxmedia: So the answer is - PS4 will be more powerful in multiplatform...

Sonyboys will do that conclusion very quickly and i see that now too. but maybe i don't understand many things...

Also PS4 is 8 gb and Xbox is 7 gb of RAM?

Insider: Every multi platform or 3rd party game will look better on
xbox next.. And first party games will look better then other company's offerings.
Amd cards 10000hd series will use oban enabled parts .. Its a different acratech to any card to date.. And xbox next will stay -current because of this design.
8gig.. But 1 gig is for os.. And and multi apps running behind os and also video skype chat in game feature..
This 1 gig can not be used for games.

Misterxmedia: But 1.2T GPU and 1.8T GPU is a big difference?

Is it easy to automatically use 2SOCs and make 1.2Tx2 = 2.4T GPU power?

PC offerings will continue use Nvidia 1SOC paradigm...or it wil be easy to port?
Insider: .2tf is old so is sony 1.8

Xbox is 4.2 omni is 3.2
Its no difference to developing for 360... The tools are highly- developed to handle the system.
And the first time you see xbox iq you will know... The winner.
The hardest part will be for studios to work with ray traced graphics enabled engines.. And its going to come down to the story and game .. There are a lot
Of factors .. We have the graphics now...

misterxmedia: No, i mean 1.2T for 1 SOC GPU in xbox(1.2x2Socs total on GPU part) as you said today and i can guess 1.8T for GPU in PS4 if its total 3.2T.

Many PC engines will use only 1 GPU on software level if only it will scale automatically....so only 1SOC for majority engines to use on xbox next?
Insider: The 2xvenus and 1x mars are design with oban controllers. These soc can work together. But they do not need crossfire..

Porting is not a problem.. Porting pc games
would be a lot easer this time...

Any part of the engine code can be sent to any cpu core or gpu dsp its very open..
    due to the blitter.

Misterxmedia: ok, but i still can not see 2x or 3x xbox next more powerful. it will be interesting have a good day and thank a lot

Insider: I can because i have seen it..

Tflops is only half the picture there is stuff in this console that will change the way we see gfx

I just have a hard time buying that Mynd. 4.2 terraflops? There is no single PC card out there right now that can match that kind of performance- that is completely insane.

And all of this will be done on a machine that is sucking less than 300 watts of power?

    This is pure fantasy man..

On paper, and it will be to do with the efficiency, not necessarily raw power.
They are still rating it at 3.2

    But 3 GPUS, 3 CPU's?

    Yeah it could hit it.

Thats only 600 gflops per unit.

Both consoels appear to be rated at 3.2 tflops.

Graphics cards hit mid 1.5 teraflops now anyway, so if you consider these rumors, the majority of flops are based in the GPU's, not unbelievable.

$#@! I could take two 4850's and have 2 teraflops.

The info is getting more solid and reliable, but still taking it with a grain of salt. If leaks are from CES expect more "news".

It does all gel with what we have heard though.
-MS was always rumored to have a dual GPU design.
-Sony are going a more straighter traditional PC type path

Mr Grumpy doesn't want to partake in rumor and speculation.
But he doesn't have to ruin everyone else s fun.

No, leaks are coming form CES. There is nothing in that article that refers to anything new.

Dude.. The GTX 680 hits nowhere NEAR that level.

15 Terraflops? No $#@!ing way man.. Not unless you're gonna sink thousands of dollars into a device.

Besides, I'm under the impression flops aren't the best metric for performance when it comes to consoles anyway?

    Not 15, 1.5, lol, sorry I missed the .

There is a lot of factors that go into a GPU, as I say teraflops are not that much of a measure.

    http://www.informationweek.com/hardw...-car/208800881

AMD hit a teraflop in 2008.
    Again its about efficiency.

Looks like the leaks are coming from people VERY familiar with the design of the the new Xbox.

    http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/01/...amd-executives

Over the last year, AMD executives have been abandoning ship for rival Nvidia, and according to a new lawsuit, they took confidential information about the Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 with them. Engadget reports that AMD has filed suit against four ex-employees, claiming that the executives absconded with thousands of confidential documents, including sensitive information about technologies at use in next-gen consoles. As our well-placed sources told us last year, custom silicon based on AMD's A8-series APU and HD 7670 GPU will be used in the PlayStation 4, while the Xbox 720 will combine an IBM PowerPC CPU and a custom version of AMD's 6670 GPU.

The lawsuit targets the former VP of AMD's Strategic Division, Robert Feldstein, who played a key role in developing custom hardware for game consoles like the Xbox 360, Wii, and Wii U. AMD claims that he and others transfered 100,000 files that contain trade secrets related to development, based on "forensically-recovered data" that indicates the executive used external storage devices on his company computer before his departure. What's more, Feldstein and Richard Hagen, another AMD executive, lured two other employees to Nvidia.
With Nvidia seemingly edged out of the upcoming console generation, Feldstein could be the key to regaining a role in future console hardware. Whether or not he has or will use proprietary data stolen from AMD to help achieve that goal remains to be seen.
I don't need no stinkin' signature!
