via IGN.You may have noticed that there are lots of rumours flying about regarding next-gen consoles. No one knows definitely when Microsoft and Sony will unveil their successors to the current Xbox and PlayStation, but Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai has said that it will let Microsoft make the first move.
Sony CEO, Kaz Hirai
In the Business section of The Times today, Hirai said, "Why go first, when your competitors can look at your specifications and come up with something better?"
With Nintendo already out the next-gen blocks with the Wii U, can Sony hold its bottle until Microsoft announces? Surely his comments are slightly disingenuous, since there would be relatively little scope for changing the specs of the PlayStation this late in its development cycle. It's more likely that the additional time would be use to adjust the messaging surrounding the announcement.
Last week was a speculation rich week for the PlayStation 4, with reports that Sony will retire the DualShock controller.

I find that hard to believe unless they are upping their specs. I'd like to see the business section that they are quoting this from.

that's so nice of him, which he was there when i had competition asking an attractive lady out last night over at the MICROSOFT BALL
ON TOPIC:
I really think this is a joke, no way would either let this happen. Unless Sony have something to gain out of this
Like a direct failure of sales for the Xbox720, unlikelyLast edited by claud3; 01-21-2013 at 21:27.

The problem with this is that the specs of both consoles are already set. Sure, minor changes can be made but him implying that they will make major changes based on what MS announces is total BS. It sounds like Sony is going to be behind at least 6+ months and will try to spin it positively.
Last time Sony had good cause to delay because they included Blu-Ray and it wasn't quite when MS launched. It was a very smart delay. This time around there doesn't seem to be any good cause for a delay other than being behind in MS in the development cycle. That is not a good thing.I don't need no stinkin' signature!

The only rational reason why this is happening Sony is behind on development of the console then they planned to be and knowing ms is about to announce the new console soon.
Its just my theory.

lmfao what a load of garbage. Letting MS have a headstart like last time is a bad idea no matter how you slice it, further it's not like they can adjust the near-finalized silicon they have as a reaction to Microsoft's unveiling of the Durango. Unless they REALLY are that far behind.
This is PR spin. Sure, they'll be late to the party but they can't change much.

R&D costs say
The only thing they could possibly change at this point is the memory... Go from 4GB (according to rumors) to 6-8GB to match MSWhen the Bogeyman goes to sleep every night, he checks his closet for Chuck Norris.
when Chuck Norris goes to sleep every night, he checks under his bed for Daryl Dixon!!

Weren't Sony saying just some months ago that giving MS another head start like they did with 360 would be unacceptable ?!
-
01-22-2013 #23

http://money.cnn.com/2006/05/08/tech...cing/index.htm
Sony said it is taking steps to avoid the widespread shortages consumers faced last holiday with the Xbox 360. The company plans to ship 2 million PlayStation 3s at launch and plans to ship another 2 million before the end of 2006. Kaz Hirai, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, said the company also plans to ship an additional 2 million units in the first quarter of 2007.
"The next generation doesn't start until we say it does," said Hirai.
While Sony is offering two pricing options for consumers, the more expensive machine is much more feature rich – and likely the default choice for gamers who can afford it. This is somewhat similar to Microsoft's launch of the Xbox 360, where the more expensive $399 machine actually proved to be the better bargain.
