Check it out. Sony has just been fined 250K in the UK for its failure to secure user accounts following the hacking in 2011.
Bizarrely, it's going to appeal, despite the fact that it's already cost them millions to rectify.
They should just pay it and hope all gets shoved under the carpet. They don't want any more publicity for this, surely?

It has been 2 years now, Sony does not need to pay a dime. Anything can be hacked these days and Sony should not have to pay another dime. Worried about getting your info stolen? Use a damn PSN card from now on....
Anyone who got their info stolen was refunded any lost money by their bank or credit card provider.

If sony was liable, it would have been sued to hell by now. This will be appealed and overturned.

This has been all over the radio today...a 2 year old news story and for a mere £250K, not what I'd call big news. This was probably forgotten about by the general public.
We all know that Sony has been a big target this generation for negativity and now with the possibly imminent announcement of a new console why not try to damage their reputation further.
Ok, that may be a bit far fetched, but when I first heard it on the news it's what I thought of!!Last edited by Bhindi_Bhajji; 01-24-2013 at 15:20.

I just wonder why they would even attempt this suit

bollocks to that, they should be fined.
as someone who is *constantly* pestered by ppi phone calls etc, but never gives out their personal information, i like the idea of the data protection act coming down hard on people that lose or 'share' your details.
perhaps itll make companies invest in better security and think twice about what they do with personal info.Last edited by J3ff3; 01-24-2013 at 16:23.
Got YLOD? In the UK? I'll buy it off you.

Makes sense I'm not familiar with UK laws. I thought initially it was a class action but its government Sony is better off just paying why even spend more going thru an appeals process smh

Just wondering, why did they wait this long to fine Sony?

2 years later and they want 250k more dollars?
I agree with Sony, 250 is nothing to them but they'll win the appeal anyway.. these people are just trying to screw them out of 250 large.

There are laws in place to protect consumers. I'm not sure about anything in the UK (has to be tho) if it was here in the US it would be up to the state to press any action towards a company

what a load of nonsense.
This was a fine imposed by an independent commission whose main aim is to protect the private data of individuals and uphold information rights.
Sony's fuck up was clearly a breach of item 7 of the data protection act:
ICO's investigation found that:Appropriate technical and organisational measures shall be taken against unauthorised or unlawful processing of personal data and against accidental loss or destruction of, or damage to, personal data.
and that:the security measures in place were simply not good enough.
let's keep your emotions out of this. sony isn't being 'bullied' or 'picked on' because they are the "best at what they do". its because they were negligent. companies can be hacked, yes, but *appropriate* preventative measures were not taken. it was well known at the time, and the ICO's investigation and fine just confirms it.There’s no disguising that this is a business that should have known better. It is a company that trades on its technical expertise, and there’s no doubt in my mind that they had access to both the technical knowledge and the resources to keep this information safe.Got YLOD? In the UK? I'll buy it off you.
