If your laptop is for casual usage, you're fine with what you have. I'm guessing you have windows 7.

I wouldn't know about 8 taking less ram. But if it's casual usage, you aren't going to need a lot of ram in the first place. Is it worth the hassle of installing another os? It's your call dude.

You may want to go to a local store and try out Windows 8 first. I absolutely hate it.

I hated windows 8, but it seemed to be more geared to touch screens cause it was better that way.

Windows 8 is okay. Not great and not better than 7 for a PC of any description. Just okay.

It's on sale via Microsoft's website until the end of this month (Ł25 here in the UK). I did get a copy for my laptop (3 years old) and it runs fine but like others mentioned - it wasn't really designed with a PC as it's primary platform, at least that's not how it feels. It's more of a 'jack of all trades, master of none' operating system. If you're tempted, get it now whilst the deal is on. It's reasonable value for money.

Kind of on/off topic. Something I read the other day that annoyed me somewhat was Microsoft refusing to accept their poor design decision(s). Apparently, they're having a go at some major hardware manufacturers for not putting out a strong hardware line-up (why would you take a huge financial risk when everything pointed to PC consumers not liking it from the get go!?), rather than really looking at why the operating system is performing so poorly.

It doesn't fill me with confidence that Windows 8 will get better for the PC, or that Microsoft will learn from their mistakes.

If you do get 8, make sure to get a start menu application. I'm currently using Pokki on my desktop but there are others. Pokki is pretty awesome. It allows you to have easy access to some web apps (like gmail etc) so you don't need to log in. It also has nice search function to search both web and apps locally. Best of all, it's free. The only downside is the lack of combustibility (it only comes in white and back theme) but it's not that bad.

If you want traditional windows exp/more combustibility are willing to spend some money ($5) start 8 is also pretty good, if not there are other free ones. Check out that article.

BTW: A lot of these start menus come with an option to boot directly into desktop mode so you don't to deal with metro. You will however have to manually change some file types (via right click -> properties) so they don't open with crappy metro app but rather a desktop app. An example is pictures, they will automatically open in metro ap but you can change it back to windows photo viewer for desktop.

A lot of people are commenting that it is better for touchscreens, but I have used the Surface and find it just as awkward. Try clicking on excel, for example, and you are carried into the Classic desktop. Personally, I think the interface would be better if they could launch everything from "metro" and "classic" and give the consumer the choice of whichever one they want to use. On the Surface, I would never want to see the classic interface.

I have win8 on a couple computers and it doesn't kill me to use it. I keep Win7 on the computer I occasionally use for work.

Windows 8 is supposed to be a lot more faster and just generally better. You should definitely give it a try.

I don't really like it either. It just feels like it was made too much for touchscreen and not enough for standard PCs. I know a lot of people like it but I'll take 7 or XP any day of the week over 8. Just not for me.
