Just heard about this, shocking!
A nightclub fire in southern Brazil has probably left more than 200 people dead, according to a senior police official.
Major Gerson da Rosa Ferreira, overseeing military police rescue efforts at the scene, told reporters 159 bodies had been identified and removed from the venue in the city of Santa Maria.
Victims had suffocated or been trampled, he said, adding that the death toll was likely to exceed 200 people.
The incident occurred 187 miles west of the state capital of Porto Alegre. Estado de S Paulo newspaper reported on its website that as many as 2,000 people were in the nightclub when the fire broke out.
Luiza Sousa, a civil police official in Santa Maria, said the blaze started when a member of the band or its production team ignited a flare, which then set fire to the ceiling. The blaze spread "in seconds", he said.
The Rio Grande do Sul state health secretary, Ciro Simoni, said respirators from across the state were being sent to the scene.

With how poorly the club and its employee set up the event and handled the fire it could have been much worse.
They were about 1,000 people over the building capacity(up to about 2,000 people on some nights). The guards also had closed the doors to prevent people from leaving at first because they thought it was a fight and didn't want people to leave without paying.Last edited by Ryunosuke; 01-28-2013 at 01:50.

Scary stuff. That happened in a city very close to where I came from. According to what I was reading most people died from the smoke the fire caused (apparently the foam used for acoustic insulation was what caught fire). Reading the stories about survivors and the families of the people who died is extremely depressing.

A lot of people died during the weekend. There was a prison riot at Venezuela and the state of emergency from Egypt. This is nuts.
