Why does the U.S. treat issues so lightly?

Gun control and immigration are two hot issues in the country right now.

It's been months since cases like Aurora and the Trayvon Martin case. People agree that gun control or a way to screen gun owners is the way to go. Well, why hasn't anything been passed? Does it take that long to come up with something so it can get passed through the House and Senate? Gun violence has been going up since 2004, why is it we wait for something to happen to address this?

It's the same with immigration. We've been having immigration issues for years, so why wasn't something done about it when it first became an issue? The same about education. The U.S. is getting worse educating kids, when will something be done about drop outs?

Because this government is extremely dysfunctional. This is the worst lack of cooperation I have ever seen. Politicians being politicians....useless. They rather blame each other than find solutions for problems that I believe could have been fixed a long time ago.

Focus. Control. Conviction. Resolve. A true ace lacks none of these attributes. Nothing can deter you from the task at hand except your own fears. This is your sky.

I think it's more about the general public's acceptance with mediocrity. Our country is no longer driven by success; instead, people demonize the successful and sympathize with the downtrodden. It's fine to be on unemployment for two years. It's fine to perform sub-par in school. It's fine when you can't afford to feed your children. It's OK to be dependent on your parents until you're in your late 20s.

This entire mentality allows our elected officials to do as their constituents. When a majority of their electorate don't give a $#@! about anything, why should they? As long as they can keep the gravy-train coming with entitlement programs, further perpetuating the root of the problem as I see it, then there's no incentive for anyone to change anything. Scott Rasmussen said, "...public opinion in America always precedes political change." So, no gun control, immigration reform or education reform, either.

We're allowing ourselves to become more apathetic and it'll be the downfall of us all.

Apart from family and friends, who still cares about the Trayvon Martin case? Is anyone still taking pictures of themselves wearing a hoodie with a Skittles wrapper stuck to their mouths to 'raise awareness'?

Gun violence is only going up because media outlets are inadvertently fueling them with how much time they spend reporting the same thing over and over again and making regular, law-abiding gun owners look like the bad guys.

We get the same sort of thing in the UK, they report the same type of stories over and over again which makes us think that things are getting worse, but the news is always controlled and the general public are only told what they 'need to know'.

The number of instances of gun violence in the USA was on a climb between the mid-1980s to the early 1990s, but has been on a decline since. I believe other violent crimes (with other weapons) have been decreasing as well.

It's not that the US takes issues lightly... it's that they don't take to issues whatsoever and try to create other "issues" unrelated to the main issue to distract the general public from the main issue at hand or to divert their attention away from some other bull$#@! they're working on behind the scenes.

It's the same half-assed or entirely non-approach bull$#@! that Mexicans keep flooding in illegally by the masses over our pathetically "guarded" borders. In 10-20 years over half of the US population is going to be Mexicans. Half. Like... wtf?

Trayvon wanted to be a thug and gangster he got what he asked for. As for so call gun control we already have over 2000 guns laws that is not being enforce by democrate who keep letting criminal goes free because they feel sorry for the scumbag so what is the point of more laws?

All u doing is making it harder on law abiding citizen and possibly turn them into criminal while letting the real criminal goes free to cause more havoc on the street, and than what, oh thats right more laws.

Better screening for guns owner? LOL more than 500 ppl get kill with hand/feets and hammer each year, does that mean we should have background check every time ppl buy hammers or carry their fist into public space?

Same thing with immigration laws, why have them if ur going to make 20 mil illegal legal citzen? Why even patrol the border? Why even have citizenship for that matter. See, why have all these laws if u don't enforce it?

Beause stupid people elected Democrats who don't actually DO anything useful, but appease the simple minded masses with dog and pony shows.

Gun Control is a prime example. What will their propsed new bans actually achieve? NOTHING.

So you limit the number of rounds a magazine holds. Gee, I guess the killer will now have to carry another magazine. Going to limit semi-auto fire weapons? Believe it or not most semi-auto guns have a slower fire rate than a revolver. Want to ban an "assault rifle"? What exactly is an assault rifle? It's a small caliber hunting rifle (Often called a Varmit Rifle) with a black stock and a pistol grip.

Want to ban military style weapons, but allow hunting rifles? Allow me to point out that the US Army M24 Sniper Rifle is nothing more than a Remington Model 700 hunting rifle with a few minor modifications that any owner can make. Add a scope, tripod, and change the barrel to a 5 groove rifled barrel and you have an M24.

Think these bans will prevent crimes? To even suggest that is trying to suggest that a criminal, a murderer, is somehow going to decide not to commit a murder just because they can't legally buy a specific gun. It's ignoring the fact that they will either just buy the gun illegally, or find an alternate weapon. They are going to commit murder, they do not care about laws. Furthermore, trying to pass new laws is irrelvent when the government fails the enforce the laws that already exist. Nearly 70% of all murders in the US are committed by convicted felons which already can't legally buy or own a gun.

The UK and Mexico are prime examples of countries with strict gun control and out of control violent crime. Far from making their countries safer, they've created nations of victims where criminals can act with impunity, knowing their victims are incapable of defending themselves or fighting back. The gun bans in the UK and Mexico are nearly identical, and so are their violent crime rates.

UK Violent Crime Rate = 2,109 per 100,000
Mexico Violent Crime Rate = 2,437 per 100,000
US Violent Crime Rate = 386 per 100,000

Despite all of the media hype, the US is safer than almost every country in Eruope, it's safer than Canada or Mexico, and it's safer than Australia, all of which have strict gun control.

But, in general, people are stupid and easily scared, so it's easy for political groups like liberals to drum up that fear in order to gain political support. They can use the fear to divert attention away from their other failings, and they can use that fear to strip people of their ability to oppose them. Their goal is NOT to reduce crime, they like the crime. The crime helps them gain more power.

The issue can be summed up as this: The government chooses to inflate and focus on smaller issues rather than larger, important ones. It also reinforces the notion that the core two-party system is currently failing us; every contest between the Republicans and Democrats is like two children screaming at each other. Both always lean far in any issue and rarely see the reason and benefits of the middle-ground. Instead of focusing on the economy and 'war', the big subjects of now are stupid things like gun laws and gay marriage.

A dramatic issue of the Government, especially Congress, is that a large majority are old, white, Christian men. Many of them don't realize what the $#@! they're talking about on many subjects; we need some new and different perspectives in our Government. We need people who are willing to actually make things better and actually look at the logic and evidence.

As far as I'm aware it was never determined what exactly went down during that incident, so I don't know what you're talking about.

That's retarded. There's a drastic difference in doing background screenings for legal gun ownership and someone buying a hammer. The Government doesn't want to personally hand firearms to people who have been demonstratively dangerous before.

A lot of those problems you listed about the party system mostly boils to one main reason. These people are career politicians. They flip flop back and forth so they will become politicians again. Then you have the ones that change party to get reelected. Those piss me off more than all. Keep the same people in the house and Senate you'll keep having the same problems and nothing gets accomplished. Kind of like the situation we are in now.

They're all politicians huh? Why is it so hard to hold them accountable then? If you don't fullfil what you promised or don't solve these issues, you don't win reelection or you get impeached.
