My hypothesis is that they will keep the online gaming free as well as access to paid apps like Netflix/Hulu/whatever. They will bundle nicer features like cross game chat, Gaikai B/C and perhaps make the interface ad-free if you upgrade to the premium service.
They won't make basic/mandatory functionality a part of the premium service so much as they will make it just plain dumb not to have it. It would be a win/win for them. Sony knows they will never sell 100 million consoles if they start nickel and diming out basic functions and alienate the fanbase they have built up to this point.
Then again, they could prove me wrong. In which case, I just budgeted $500 towards a graphics card upgrade later this year. Sony, use the carrot, not the stick!

I agree that it would be smart to keep the online play free. However, they might still do it for the sole reason that where else are those people going to go? Switching to xbox means they still pay, switching to nintendo isn't really an option since the Wii U won't be on par with PS4. The only option is PC, which some hardcore gamers might do, but that is not something the vast majority of the general public (and the majority of console owners) would even consider.
That being said, I doubt they'll charge for online play. It's something that helps differentiate them from Xbox and could be a major factor considering how much the industry is moving towards multiplatform.
