For the first time in my life as a gamer...we're literally walking into a next-gen scenario where no one has any idea whose going to be the market leader. Now I'm not saying the expectations going in are always the same when you're coming out of a gen. At the beginning of this gen everyone assumed the PS3 would dominate simply because of how the PS1 and PS2 crushed the competition. BUT as we all know Nintendo took the crown with Sony coming up in last place.
Now that we're here about to start the cycle again, you would think Nintendo would have a stranglehold on this shit...but as we can see...they clearly don't. So going into next gen. Outside of their obvious financial situation as a whole company. I would say Sony's biggest problems going into the next gen would be Public Perception and Microsoft. As of right now, the public loves the PS brand. They love the games coming to it, the price points and marketing. So as long as they can keep up in the public's good books while showing the consumer they deserve our dollars (via great games off the BAT we shouldn't have had to wait over a year to get the first GREAT PS3 game outside of Resistance) and whether or not they can compete with Microsoft. Right now...Next-Gen is anyone's game

Sony's Biggest Obstacle Going Into Next Gen?
Thank You Shaq...For Everything

Every generation, the rules change and everyone has a fresh start. This one is no different. You take the old rules and just throw them in the waste bin. It's anyone's game. It's the people who expect things not to change that the most changes for. Take Nintendo. They blew away the last gen but are generating losses due to the WiiU. It's not like it hasn't happened before. When they got their butts kicked with the N64, their handhelds still ruled the day. Brand loyalty has a lot less to do with winning in consoles and everything to do with getting the right machine out to the game developers and the people.

I think sony needs to focus on getting out consistent 1st party IP's out. That's the main reason why any gamer would choose an PS console over an xbox. Keep the free online to play along with PS+ but they need to drastically improve the PS store with the next console also continue to make PS+ a great deal. I think Sony can only go up.
The wild card is MS here they blew up last gen became a market leader and a serious threat to Nintendo and sony. I have a feeling they may OVER do it with the next console just a gut feeling.
Nintendo....I wouldn't pencil them in at the top I love my Wii U but its gonna come down how well they do with 1st party IP's and if they can get DECENT ports which its looking like its not gonna happen because of hardware limitations. Again I'm assuming.
If I had to be optimistic about which company will do well it has to be sony.
However same argument can be had in favor the xbox

It's hard to say when all we have are rumours at this point but if the majority are true then I think the biggest obstacle will be to convince 3rd party devs to put a better game on the PS4 than the Next box (which will have a large user base). MS are smart and if they're chosing the middle ground it's because they know that's where it's warmest and most secure.
Sony could be left with a powerful machine that is playing games that are well beneath its operating potential, except exclusives of course.

Yeah that's the kind of vibe I'm getting from these rumours
Though I hope with the architecture apparently being similar as well as developers finding PS4 easy to work with will mean that games can be easily up-ported to PS4. I guess it will come down to the tools Sony provides devs too.
This is al assuming there is even a difference between the consoles. But like you said, Sony's first party games will shine regardless and I can't wait!
GT6 in the first year please.

Like claud3 said, the consumer. Sony tried to take advantage of their dominance of the PS2 in the US with the PS3. They were to cocky and thought they had it locked up from the beginning. MS and Nintendo proved that isn't the case. I think Sony will have a better game plan this time around and see sales much higher in the US market this time around. Although they cant let the same thing happen in Europe like the PS3 did in the US. I think the brand is strong enough there where they can be more relaxed with it but don't count all their eggs too soon. If they don't get the big head i believe they will have a very strong outing next gen. I think price was also the primary factor to why the ps3 did so poor early on. I'm almost certain they won't make that same mistake again.

If they keep restricting gamers of their products then of course they're going to struggle. The more easier and friendlier their next console is to both their consumers and developers, the better it will be for them.
