I think it will happen. Just look at how Japan is tightening up its copyright laws. The video game industry is a big issue and it plays right into the whole copyright and DRM laws that Japan is passing.

Yeah even if Jack Tretton still feels the same way a year later the final decision isnt up to him.

They should just stick with the online passes, I thought that was supposed to be the alternative. I'm not gonna be online 100% of the time when I'm playing it so if they do that I'll just play PC for next gen, only really care about Bethsoft titles now anyway, I don't spend as much time gaming nowadays.

What I fear the most is that they won't have a choice. The publishers could get real greedy this generation and demand that a platform support this crazy DRM or not support the console.
It all makes sense now.. After all, the machine is hyped as "The next water cooler" and the fans of this water cooler just love to talk about bottom lines, publishers profit margins and stock prices. The world has become one giant office and I must be the guy they're all saying needs to grow up because I still like having fun.

Jacks in charge of Sonys weakest market, with the most important developers.
Its a terrible position to be in.
He is also at the whim of what ever developers suggest they do.
At the end of the day if publishers are saying "we are only going with X because they are doing single instancing", he aint got a lot to say about other than "we will do it too".
Nobody should be thinking this is the console manufactures doing this, the only people winning out of this is the 3rd party publishers.
And they are leveraging the fact that this is a new round of development, where they can choose to ignore support of a console until such time as the market becomes important enough.
EA/Activision/Ubisoft -they are the ones driving this initiative.
If they can get one to flip, they will get the other. And if the other doesn't, they are risking no support at launch.

Think a little bit deeper, folks. It's very simple. Don't you think we would be hearing about it right now that the ps4 has no 3rd party support due to Sony allowing used games? Think about all the damn money they would be missing out on. Sony would block those same devs from putting out titles on the ps3 if that's the case. They lose out on millions.
Prepare for meltdowns if these next gen console rumors are true. Phase 1: Denial. Phase 2: Mask a lie under "opinion" vs a fact. Phase 3: Bring up the PS3/360 era when it has nothing to do with the subject. Phase 4: Say that the power gap doesn't matter but constantly defend the weaker specs.

All I know is, I'd swear allegiance to the Wii-U before I'd buy an "always connected" DRM slavery machine and also focus more on PC gaming/Steam. I could turncoat in a second on Sony or any other company that thinks they have my balls in a vice grip, because they never will.

That's why I have always primarily been a PC gamer, the community on the PC is as such that we don't take anything from publishers and fight back, it's a shame that console owners don't do the same. It's also another reason why I tend to only purchase exclusives on consoles and everything else on the PC.
Why did I not purchase an XBox or an X360? You have to pay to play online otherwise I would have bought one each. Why did I purchase a PS3 and Vita? Free to play online. Why do I have a Plus subscription? For the price of the subscription I'm getting free monthly games and discounts on games for something that's pittance per month.
If the PS4 requires always online DRM or even starts charging to be online only then just like you I'll immediately abandon consoles altogether. What was the best thing about the PS2 and before era (excluding XBox)? The fact that all you did was play games, now they're turning into something that's not needed.
The Xbox's and Playstations are turning into media centres, it's not needed any more. Hell I picked up a Raspberry Pi at Christmas, £40 I spent on it total for the system, a 16GB SDHC card, XBMC running on Raspbian, and it already does more than the PS3 and has replaced it as my media centre, all it does is stay plugged into my TV at all times and it's powered via the TV USB drive.
Consoles need to rethink their strategy if devices like that are coming out that can essentially do more in the home media environment at a fraction of the cost.

A big ditto. The only reason that I am using consoles right now are Naughty Dog and Quantum Dreams (used to be Capcom and Squaresoft on that list, but they fell pretty far this gen). I will, sadly, turn my back on those two wonderful companies though if it means not putting up with any BS 'always online to play' DRM - or any other dodgy tactic for that matter.
