Next gen will be a substantial leap over current gen says Epic

Yeah, I mentioned this before in another thread, but it really does deserve to be reiterated. In terms of NVidia and how graphics technology overall has moved forward from when PS3 was launched, this may help put it in perspective. When the PS3 launched, it was literally a few months before the GeForce 8800 hit the market (still used dedicated pipelines at that point).. It was followed by the 9800 which was the final dedicated pipeline GPU by them and led way to the GeForce 280.
Since then, there have been five generations of unified shader pipeline based graphics series come out. They have recently announced the GeForce 780. Also, since the PS3 came out, the fundamental hardware has changed to support DX10 and now DX11. Now, before I get dragged into what Microsoft APIs have to do with anything, you have to remember that the specidfication for hardware support changes with these (like a hardware tesselator for true DX11 support to point out an easy one).
Even the thinking behind how these cards has shifted towards performance per watt used rather than simply the raw statistics due to how small the process is used to create these new generation processing units. In short, giant fundamental leaps have been made between then and now. The sheer amount of performance you can bleed out of these chips is in a completely different league than the generation of hardware that went into the Xbox 360 and the PS3. The gamers should reap the rewards and it certainly seems like Sony put their money where their mouth is when it comes to supporting stereoscopic 3D at 1080p and possibly even 4k.
As much as the article is laced with marketing hype language. People should have big expectations for these new machines. It's not going to be more of the same. This is the generation that delivers on its promises.

The problem is making it mandatory that the developers meet those minimal requirements, which I unfortunately don't see happening! I remember the Xbox 360 was suppose to have a 720p minimum on games when it came out, but that I know got pushed aside as well as time went on, but hopefully this next generation will be different! I want to play 1080p games on my 1080p TV damnit! (and 60 fps would be so buttery smooth!)

1080p needs to be mandatory across the board. I don't give a fuck what the visuals or framerate comes out to be as a result. The consoles need a standard of quality.

Mixed signals all over the place, it seems a lot of people have a different idea of substantial. Just saying my idea of substantial isn't Battlefield 3 running on maxed settings, which is probably what it will be comparable to.
Trophy-licious!

Nicer graphics are nice.
But for me, to consider a true "substantial" leap would be in the interactivity of the game. For example, in open world games (RPGs, GTA-types etc) the world should be more unique and habitable.
Not sure if it's doable this gen; but I've been yearning for this more than gfx, for years.

Re-reading it, I don't see where he mentions the next consoles specifically. The writer calls for the next consoles, but the Epic guy doesn't:
Regardless of how good games look on their high end PCs, of course console gaming will eventually reach it, but it doesn't necessarily mean that it's coming up this gen.“We’re more enthusiastic now than ever about the future of high-end platforms,” explained Sweeney.
“What we’re doing on high-end PCs is going to be representative of the future consumer gaming experience and it’s going to be awesome. It’s going to be a substantial leap over the current generation.”
That's how I see it anyways.

It will be a substantial jump for those who dont pc game.
The biggest jump ive witnessed was when the original playstation and dreamcast came out and 3d gaming was born.

I honestly wouldn't mind a solid 30 FPS if it means crazy textures, lighting, particle effect increases etc. 30 FPS has never bothered me and 60 FPS has never wowed me.
