Also, why wouldn't Infinity make sense? Is it because of what they would have to call the successor? If this is to be believed, they are not calling it the 720 so what does the successor have to do with anything?

They could just call Xbox 'whatever.' There is no requirement that it has to be related somehow to the name of the previous console. Xbox is the brand and as long as it's there.....the relation will be made in the eyes of the consumer.
I think it's important because you don't want to confuse your consumer. For example, the rumor suggesting Microsoft would simply call it the Xbox when that was the name of the original console. That's confusing.

Also, how would you begin to design an ad for your product around the Infinity subtitle? 'It does everything'? Sony beat them to it.

The Wii might have sounded silly but you could make a slogan out of it e.g. 'Wii would like to play'. I'm sure that played some part in the platform being successful for Nintendo.

No way this is the actual logo.
ITs a world wide symbol for infinity and it cannot be copyrighted or trademarked. Even if we see it in adverts we wouldnt necesarily associate it with Xbox.

That is a good point...but I still don't like how they're going with the infinity symbol rather than just calling it Infinity.

I don't know if it will be a good idea consumer-wise.

They aren't going with it because it isn't real. This is the article:

The Destiny reveal may be bigger than expected if this latest rumor is proven to be true. According to Marcel (Nintex_NL), the source of this logo that’s floating around the net is saying the Destiny reveal will also reveal the next Xbox. While this is pure speculation, the reveal of Destiny so close to the planned PS4 reveal is certainly questionable. The file extension for the logo is also .xbx, so that’s another thing to consider. Checkout the image above.

For the record, we hate posting rumors like this, but this evidence seemed worthwhile to share.

Update: This was posted before the reveal of Destiny, so don’t expect to see the logo in the video. We’re currently hunting down the originating source. Title was not meant to deceive anyone etc. Like we said earlier, rumors are not fun to report on.
    This is the Destiny reveal:

That is the logo I came up with when I said Microsoft should name the next console, Xbox Xfinity.

    http://www.psu.com/forums/showthread...tion?p=5826046

Actually, mynd was the first to actually post the logo, but it was my thought all along when I named it Xfinity.

The name is definitely neat. I don't think Sony will be as creative but we'll see.

Nintendo hasn't been consistent with naming their console up until now. It has worked out well for Nintendo (Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo Wii.) The name Nintendo was the only common thing among those.

Also, I was responding to the part where you said calling it Infinity wouldn't make sense -- not simply calling it 'Xbox.' I was saying that as long as Microsoft keeps Xbox part of the name, it wouldn't be confusing or not make sense.

As for advertising it? If they were to call it Infinity, they'd find a way to advertise it. I don't think Microsoft is going to struggle there. They don't have to use the slogan 'It does everything.' Infinity for Microsoft could represent something else, like always being connected.

    @Lethal -- Microsoft can't call it Xfinity. That's a Comcast brand.

If this is true, the symbol is kind of a 'logo.' So, they would actually be using both, the word Infinity with the symbol; the symbol would represent it in their branding.

In my opinion, "Wii would like to play" was stupid...it was cheesy and I don't think that's the reason for their market success. The commercials themselves were well-made but that was stupid and the name was stupid. They got away with it because the product was exciting and it didn't matter what they named it.

I guess, one thing they did do right was that it was easy to pronounce.

They could have at least added a small dot in each circle, so that they looked like boobies! Everybody loves boobies...

I think they should just stick with the Orbis name, seems unique and fits in line with the name Vita.

See, for us it sounds cool but for the mainstream, it's too trekkie/nerdy. Vita sounds cool though, it's Latin/Italian!

I agree. The name isn't a big deal but it'd be cool if Sony did take on the trend...well they did with the PSP 2.

Orbis is also Latin, means 'circle', and Vita is Latin for 'life', so together between the two systems Orbis and Vita would represent a 'Circle of Life'. Would just make sense to keep that name, and to me at least it doesn't sound too geeky!
