Sounds like a smart plan, especially if it's $100 drop. If they were super crazy and did some kind of bundle on top of it, they could push some serious units I think, right before it goes next-gen.

A price drop to $199 would be pretty significant; it is the comfort zone for many consumers as far as console prices are concern. Although, if this is true I don't think the announcement will be made until Destination PlayStation.

This, along with the PS3 coming out this year and the struggles the WiiU has had will pretty much guarantee that Nintendo won't have a significant lead with the WiiU by time the PS4 comes out.

No way will they drop it to $99 at this point, that's send them back into the red for sure, even on the 12GB. I'd say $149.

TBH I haven't been keeping up with the US price and thought it was already $199, over here it's about that price but of course that's the 12GB.

As for the US right now, it's $249 for the low-end models, I believe. The Super Slim release never brought down the existing price (not in the traditional sense, that is). It just...got stuffed into $249/$299 bundles. :[

I dunno if the same thing happened in other areas.

Well not seen the drop in th UK yet although Tesco advertise PS3 12GB for £150 when click the banner it shows £170.

I expect them to announce a global price cut at E3 as they reveal the price of the PS4. Kinda how apple slash their prices at their conferences when they announce a new idevice. Makes sense to me

The Wall Street Journal has heard that Sony will leverage its Gaikai technology to allow PS3 games to be streamed to the new console without needing to include any compatible hardware. So the PS4 will have the ability to play PS3 games after all. Just not directly with a blu-ray disc...

Also aren't the PS3 drive controllers only SATA 1? So only a max of 150MB/sec. I
I am Fairly sure alot of mechanical drives thesedays saturate or at least get very close to that sort of speed.

Sony is going to have to drop the price to the $149.99 range for the cheapest models. Otherwise they run the risk of having the expensive PS3 being priced too close to the PS4 when it launches, and that would effectively kill any potential PS3 sales in the future. Sony needs that gap to be big enough that people who are still willing to buy a PS3 after it's been out for 6 years already will go ahead and spend the cash to get one rather than saving and buying a PS4 instead.

I also fully expect to see the baseline Xbox 360 down around $99 before the next-gen Xbox launches as well.

the 3 or 4 TB 3.5" drives maybe, but doubt a 2.5" 320-1TB drive would be able to do that. But even then an average 100MB/s read speed is still pretty decent even by today standards.
