I'm assuming the bit about the premium service will be the same as ps3, where you will still be able to play online for free, but any extra shit like plus offered and maybe a new Live-like party system (I hope) would only be for subscribers. They'd make a big mistake if they made you pay just to play online.

I'm sure many will chose the same as you. That has always been a big difference between the Xbox and PS. Don't need to step into their ring and lose many of the people that have decided they are going to jump ship.

Hopefully this is nothing more than just a revamped PS Plus and the current format will mostly stay unchanged.

What if it was a small amount, like 10-20$ a year? I don't find that to be unreasonable at all. I find the pure stigma against paying for a service to be extremely odd considering how much console gamers pay for their games anyways.

For the sake of preserving some leaks I'll address the current discussion in below:

I'm going to assume the quote of "most" of the PS4's online features will require a premium subscription to use implies that the free online we know on the PS3 will exist on the PS4. Most all new stuff will be subscription based, leaving basic online gaming, friends and Store access free.

The stuff with the PSEye, logging in from mobile devices, controlling your PS4 with a tablet, streaming PS3 games and others I expect to be on the subscription.

I just don't think even a revamped PSN could beat LIVE if were paid. Too many people are already on LIVE and so Sony needs to do something to bring some of them over before they start charging outright for online gaming. Tiers would maybe work but I think many would be hesitant. If there's a price they'll definitely drop it after they hype up the new features (that is, if they talk prices tomorrow).
