The PS4 will eventually play PS3 games via cloud gaming(Gaikai).
I will have to watch it again to make sure but I believe when they mentioned playing PS1 and PS2 via cloud gaming(Gaikai) they meant for any device using the Gaikai service(tablets, smart phones and more). I think the PS4 will end up being able to play PS1 and perhaps PS2 games via software emulation, although they will probably have to do a roll-out like they did with going from the PSP to the PSVita.

His first post sure is a hefty rant on a console that has not even been shown publicly yet......
Calm down and lets see what happens at E3. I found the conference to be very good. Some boring parts, but overall it had me wanting more. And I will get more at E3.
With all the negative notions towards the PS4, you are lucky to even get this reply from me.
Crying about the name of the controller? Crying about an "enhanced pc cpu?" It just seems you are trying to create problems from nothing. What are we even supposed to say? We got a glimpse at what Sony is going to offer. The Playstation 4 looks like it could be the best console ever made.
You can read up on the cpu though.

If you want an objective discussion... this where Sony needed to go. They've made their hardware easy to develop for which after the PS3 and the mind-blowing cell which took developers years to wrap their head around; this is easy right out of the box by comparison. They need to take the market by storm this time. Also, you may not give a damn about social gaming but Xbox Live is wiping the floor with PSN this generation. And that market in the US is MAJOR. I use Facebook... do I need to use it on a console, not necessarily but if it helps Sony as whole do better then more power to them. And why not more options.
I'm not a developer or a programmer so the specs I can't comment on but if it gets the job done then I don't care. So far the features sound good.
I didn't care about Diablo 3, and I was actually disappointed by that... BUT that partnership is a statement in itself and potential for something later. Just because it doesn't blow your mind now doesn't mean its not worth it in the end.
The PS Move bit, first I enjoy a developer's honesty especially when we're all thinking it. However, that little tech demo from MM was impressive. Showing Sony's potential to hone in on Nintendo's market which would be ace. It showed the Move really does do what Sony said, Sony should've had that demo years ago but whatever, better late than never.

Noones forcing you to get a Vita. And it's a pretty nice option for those that do have one.
Sharing recordings is pretty cool. People already spend tons on capture cards to do just that. And spectating is pretty fucking awesome.2. The dedicated Sony Social Network - What is this Facebook knock off garbage? No one gives a sh** what trophies you have dude. So Sony makes an entire social network for it? Buzz off.
Why were you excited for the blizzard guy? "Fuck off the stage" was my first thought. Good thing he knew and left in a few minutes.3. Chris Metzen - OMG THE BLIZZARD GUY!! I was beyond excited, expecting Titan or some bada*s new excluse IP, right? Right? No, we get a year-old PC port of the most disappointed below-expectation game of the decade. The hell off the stage.
Making it easy to develop for and being first out of the gate IS changing the status quo. Guess what's gonna happen with that? 720 getting all the ports.4. Game development - Rumors swirling around are that the next Xbox will be based on Windows NT, why didn't Sony address their foundation instead of having videos of random devs sobbing about how beautiful it is to develop on PS4? OpenGL is not good enough. Why were 3rd party game ALWAYS being ported over from 360 to PS3?!? Change the status quo.
Did they even say Jaguar? I missed that.5. AMD Jaguar - What the hell is an "Enhanced PC CPU"? Are we 4 years old dude? Drop the buzzwords, "Supercharged!" "Enhanced!" "Unified!". There was 2 minutes dedicated to the specifications. Furthermore, the AMD Jaguar is AMD's counter to Intel's Atom CPU, a laptop CPU. Explanation?
So you want to pay 600+ for the console just so you can play ps3 games? You'd probably bitch about the price point if they made it backwards compatible. I have a ps3 to play ps3 games on, plus I'll be able to play them on ps4 cloud. That's a pretty neat solution to BC, I'd say.6. Backwards compatibility - Screw you.
Agree on this one. Thankfully they only did one thing with move.7. PS Move - It was an absolute failure. When you go up before the audience and say that you now love it after a long time, it is incredibly cringe-worthy. But what do you do next? You announce some kind of Wii Sensor Bar, thanks, we really like PS Move right? No. But keep showing us videos of a group of suburbanite idiots pretending to be in a band by waving their hands like they belong in a Kinect commercial.
The biggest thing wrong with the 360 is lack of games, and they won't even be able to make a decent Halo anymore. When it comes down to it, PS4 will provide the games.TL;DR: "Social aspects are one of the biggest things for PS4," the PS4 is doing it's best to copy everything wrong with the Xbox 360. It then goes on to copy the tablet function from the Wii U, pretending everyone owns a Vita.
Drop the social networking garbage, give us a better gaming console.

Different strokes for different folks...I loved what I saw (bar a few of the boring sections). Exciting thing is that what we saw is just a snow flake on top of the tip of a big ass iceberg. Can't wait to hear more about more features and with Sony's love of FW updates, it will be cool to watch developments.

I've seen a lot of talk of disappointed people, because they think Sony is somehow selling out to the casual market by having more social features. They are still giving us all the hardcore games they always have, and the social features are just an optional bonus. So I don't really understand the complaint (not this thread specifically, just the general idea around the net). It's not like they're all of a sudden only spewing out Wii shovelware type crap.
Anyway, I'd also like to address some of the specific points brought up.
Backwards compatibility. The strategy Sony is taking is smart because it's looking ahead to the future. Once they get the streaming BC thing going, they/we will never have to worry about BC on another system. Once the infrastructure is put in place, all they have to do is continually update the content on the servers, and they'll presumably only have to do it once. So when it comes to PS9, they won't have to worry about getting BC for PS1-8, because it'll already be there.
Vita integration. You're right in that not many people have a vita. But the point your missing is that they realize this and are making this integration to give people a reason to buy a vita. Once people get a PS4 and see all the cool streaming/remote play stuff they can do with it, then they'll want to go out and buy one. Plus, being able to play PS4 games while laying in bed, or while someones watching TV sounds like a great feature. PS3 tried to do some of this fairly unsuccessfully, but the difference is that the PS4 architecture was designed specifically with this in mind, and it should be much easier to get this working.
Social integration. Optional, there really isn't anything else to say about that. Some people want it others don't, don't use it.
Also, Sony is clearly stepping away from the Move, even if it is still supported. They barely even acknowledged its existence. If it was a big part of their strategy, they would have devoted a lot of time to it.Last edited by Felix336; 02-21-2013 at 07:04.

None of those games use OpenGL, they use LibGCM.
I'm sure that Sony will offer new version of LibGCM and low level library for ps4 as well.
The hardware seems quite nice, especially when one thinks about the low level possibilities on CPU/GPU working together like we saw on Ps3.'no, no one in their sane mind uses OpenGL on PS3' - Repi
'nope, PS3 uses a wonderful low-level API called libgcm' - Repi

The only thing that ticked me off was Blizzards lack luster announcement everything else was pretty spot on. If the PS move failed oh well who cares did your really have your hopes up for it. The social apps you can't really complain about it no one is shoving it down your throat. Im pretty sure it will be simular to the Vita you can choose to check out your friends list of friends what games they have recently purchased or trophies unlocked just on a larger scale. PS4 alone though is just badass idk how anyone can say oh no its turning to a facebook machine. ps3 512mb gddr3 ps4 8gbs gddr5 16 times more ram and faster ram at that. You gotta be trolling man wth How just how could you not expect more social interaction and ps3 has PSHOME which has been successful for Sony.

"I think all those developers who are saying, "We don’t want to do a PS3 game," or "It’s really difficult to do it," should shut up and make their games. If you have time to complain about it, then you should be spending your time working on getting the most from the hardware."

The fact it's not going to natively support PS3 games out the gate is a problem for me. Essentially, I'm impressed by the overall package but remain unconvinced on it being a purchase worthy of early adoption if it won't allow me to port over my PS3 collection.
Chances are, GaiKai will offer a subscription based PS3 streaming service. But I'm not sure I'll be willing to subscribe to play games I already own physically (which are a lot). I'd prefer to just be able to put my 'old' games into the new console. This is about convenience.
When Microsoft announce, I now expect them to make a big deal about backwards compatibility - here's what the other guys aren't doing... (Not to turn this into a comparison thing, I doubt I'll be buying theirs before Sony's).

I read and understand what your saying, but still, you can`t be surprised. It will still be a badass console...it will have the support, and you will grow to love it, despite your valid points. You know it, i know it. Lol.
Edit: and i agree with everything that goo has said..

Granted I'm so very biased with this one, but really? Trophies/Achievements are here to stay and are expanding. Hell, a lot of the social aspects and gaming vids now are solely dedicated to trophies. I know some trophy video guide makers who are going to have a SUPER FREAKING FIREWORKS FIELD DAY!!! to see the share feature in action. It'd most likely make their video making so much easier.

Ok I will try to address your main concern.
Social social social. Know what, I also couldn't give a shit about social this or social that. Completely off my radar, I'm just a core gamer. Although even I can think of a number uses for the share button, the whole facebook intergration and other guff puts me to sleep.
But guess what? They got the important bits out of the way first. They made sure to stress it's going to be an excellent games machine with great functionality, it's just going to be other things as well. That's fine.
Regarding the fact that almost no-one has a Vita, true, but are they not going to support their other system, lol? Of course it has strong ties with Vita. But more importantly, it's not just Vita but mobile phones too.

Weren't On-Live the early adopter of spectating friends? Sony might revolutionise it as far as use and popularity go but I don't think they're pioneering in that regard.

My only disappointment was not seeing the PS4 itself, having said that I was probably a bit naive in my expectations as it is a long way off till "holidays 2013" and Sony still needs to keep a few things under wraps.
Yesterdays Press conference is that start of the stream of info well be getting on the PS4 between now and its release.
We did get a look at the new controller which I have to say looks pretty impressive, definitely inspiration taken from Wii, Xbox and of course previous PS controllers.
