In a roundtable conversation with journalists, President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios noted that PS3 games of both the retail and downloadable variety will not be compatible with PlayStation 4, at least not natively. In other words, your PS3 discs won’t work in the new console nor will the games you downloaded. This means that hits like Journey, The Unfinished Swan, Shatter and hundreds of other games available in the digital space will not be carried over to PlayStation 4 in addition to the collection of PS3 discs sitting on your shelf.
There’s a catch, though: emulation. The PlayStation 3 doesn’t read PlayStation 2 discs (at least not anymore), but it can play PS2 games via the PlayStation Store in an emulated environment. Yoshida concedes that this is possible for PlayStation 4 supporting legacy PlayStation consoles as well. Indeed, the Gaikai presentation during PlayStation 4’s reveal touched on this “everything, everywhere” mentality. But for now, downloaded PS3 games won’t work “unless, somehow, some games work on emulation. And the easiest thing, technically, would be to make PSone games work on PS4 with emulation. But we’re not talking about our emulation plans as yet.”
In short, “There are two ways [to play legacy content]: emulation or cloud services [from Gaikai]. But native support [of digital games from PS3], no, sorry. It doesn’t work.”
But how about some good news to close? Yoshida reaffirmed that “disc-based games on PS4” will work on any other PlayStation 4. So, as first reported yesterday, PS4 will have no used games/shared games lock for retail, store-bought titles.

Wouldn't it be easy to have emulation for both PS1 and PS2? I don't understand.

I'll still have my ps3 around if I get the need to play one of the classic titles. It's no deal breaker for me.
No thank you. I'll be gaming DRM free on a stronger console for $100 cheaper instead
Sony trolled MS. PS4 fans didn't do it. We just laughed at MS and anyone getting mad. $399 FTW!

I don't really care about the retail BC aspect. I have a PS3, 2, and 1 (somewhere). I don't really agree with download not being able to be played. I don't understand why downloaded games can't be emulated. This is really the only info that has really aggravated me. Although I guess it's not really that big of a deal as I still have a PS3. But it would be nice to be able to convert anything I did have to PS4.

My iPod doesn't play my favorite old CD's, I got over it.
BC doesn't bother me. Let me play the future.Last edited by Nick_Scryer; 02-21-2013 at 22:32.

I really don't play older games once the newer systems come out. Once the PS4 hits, I most likely wont play a PS3 game and that's just the way it is for me.

It's no big deal. I'll still have my PS3 so it doesn't really matter.

My sentiments follow in line with Ixion's. They could totally add PS1 and PS2 emulation or support of some kind. This is basically the only thing keeping me from fully wanting the PS4. I've spent a lot of money on my PS3 and I don't want to have to juggle two systems depending on if I want to play Uncharted 4 or Resident Evil 4 in HD.

I dont care. I never used the BC feature of the original PS3 either.

For me, I'll take no B/C as a trade off for used games and free online gaming.
Thoroughly enjoying my PS+ membership.

BC would be nice but it's not a deal breaker. Since the PS3 came out, I've only played the PS2 at the GFs house when she didn't have a PS3, but since then I haven't. I have never used the BC feature for my 360.

I wouldn't doubt if a lot of people are like that. Maybe people want it just for the sake of wanting BC. I used the BC on my older model PS3 once and it was only for 1 day. I also believe half of the people bitching about it are not actually planning on using it anyway and this is a safe assumption.

If I'm to be fair, I only used the BC on PS3 once and that was to play MGS3 years ago. Since I purchased the HD collection on day one the feature had been useless for me. I think PS2 had the best catalogue of games and I believe it will never be matched but personally this feature, or lack of, isn't that big a deal if you really think about it - at least for me personally.
One way they could eliviate the need for such a feature is to make sure the spread of PS4 game releases throughout the first year is good. That is typically when people would most use BC as the current platform library slowly builds, but if there is lots of compelling software already available then fuck it
I have a backlog of 40+ games spanning PS360Vita, though. So I'm keeping my systems regarldess :X
