Sony Flexible on PlayStation 4 Cost

Sony is making a significant leap forward with the underlying technology in the PlayStation 4, but according to Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida, it isn't limiting the company's ability to be nimble in terms of the console's cost.

When asked if the company was prepared to compete with other consoles and hit a more favorable price, Yoshida said that Sony's decisions to use custom AMD hardware instead of its own proprietary Cell architecture has allowed it to save on R&D and production costs.

"The architecture choice we have made this time around has allowed us not to invest to create dedicated factories and conducting factories and things like that — so that helps in order for us to provide an affordable price to consumers."

While Sony has yet to offer a sense of what the system will cost, it seems as though the company understands that with the advent of gaming-capable sub-$200 smartphones and tablets, consumers are more cost-conscious than ever.

I agree and i can see this being the case, but that 8 GB of GDDR 5 ram can possibly be bad thing, in terms of pricing.

I hope that the 8 GB GDDR5 ram does actually give the ps4 the big leap it sounds like it could ( i mean people were saying 4gb of GDDR5 would have been enough) and not make the console too expensive.

DDR3 is around $40 for the same amount.

I think regardless of the high specs and all the goodies that will come in the box, should be safe to assume top price would be about $500, it's already been said they decided to go with the x86 processor and some other specs to reduce costs. And they wouldn't want history to repeat again.

It's no small secret that Microsoft is toying with the idea of putting their next console out there as a contract/subscription item to subsidize the cost and get people on board with a low cost of entry. That is the main reason there was not a price announcement at the PS4 conference.

There is still plenty of time to iron down cost specifics in regard to production and facilities and that's time Sony buys back in terms of seeing how MS plays their hand and reacting properly. Oops, don't act surprised.

Exactly. They played the angles right. You can adjust your price due to market very easily. Specs not so much.

I'm getting it launch either way, but I would prefer $399 for everyone. I hated it when I was the only one of my friends to have a PS3 for a long time. If they want to really show off the social media part, a ton of people need to own it.

People want the best yet aren't willing to pay for it....the article talks about gaming capable phones/tablets for sub-$200 -- really? what kind of games do they play? and any tablet/phone worth getting costs more than $400.

You can get them at a lower price subsidized but is that what you guys are asking for?
