Yoshida: PS Vita digital purchases beat PS3 each month

Last night's PS4 unveiling event showed Sony is a company committed to digital distribution and the cloud. Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida echoed those sentiments during follow-up interviews, telling Destructoid that the digital business is quite booming for Sony, especially on the PS Vita – which has more people purchasing content on a monthly basis than on PS3.

"Digital business is the faster growing business," Yoshida said. "We do not publish numbers, but every month it's almost a new record that the purchase on Vita is higher than the PS3, because everything is available [digitally]."

Among the things we anticipated from last night's event was a price drop for the PS Vita in North America. Sony lowered the price in Japan last week, but during our own interview with Yoshida, he confirmed no such plan exists for North America.

It's a handheld, so that's no surprise at all. It also helps when every game is released on the Store, not just half the time like PS3.

surely they can find a pattern in peoples buying habits on the vita, show this to developers to give them more confidence in the system, then give us more games!

Not surprised. I have bought a bunch of PS1 classics for my Vita. I think I have bought like one or two things for the PS3 from PSN.

Now if only he'd drop the price on the memory cards permanently so that people could actually store more of it. I'm none to keen on the cloud BS or even digital distribution and given the option I will always buy the physical version, as I think many people still do because they want their purchases to still buy something they can own fully, but even when I do buy the occasional digital game I would like to minimize the switching of cards. The high prices on these cards are counter intuitive to the whole idea of Digital being more convenient.

I only wish they were a little more competitive with their pricing for new full titles. PS+ aside, of course.
