It's a mobile CPU. I expect neither this nor the 720's CPU to be a beast. They will get the job done I suppose. I wish they'd both had gone with a desktop class part though.

I'm hearing that PS4 GCN has 8ACE's,each capable of running 8 CL's each. I believe Tahiti is 2 per ACE, 2 ACE's

Proper cooling for that would cost too much. What they chose runs cooler, quieter, and consumes less power. Dont expect the gen after next gen to be any different unless some new tech to solve those issues comes along.

The CPUs in the PS3 and Xbox 360 weren't mobile-level and they did fine. In the case of the 360... fine after a redesign.

I will be honest my response was just what other people have told me so i imagine it has to do with next gen consoles using off the shelf parts instead of parts specifically made for consoles. I would like to know as well.

The jag are regular cores though, not SPE's
Kinda like having 2 quad cores, but clocked lower
I think people underestimate this because they are laptop CPU's, but the power is still there especially because its 8 core, its a good trade imo

I've read it somewhere on b3d, not confirmed officially but looking at the pdf's provided by Sony some "experts/devs" there pretty much confirmed it. It's also a given that MS's next box will also have a GPU based on GCN2.

it all depends on design, its actually harder to keep a desk top cool, then a lap top, and the CPU is not the problem. The reason they use "low end" CPU for laptops is all about power consumption, if you were to use a desktop set up it would suck the battery dry in no time at all.

But the jag is definitely no slouch, no worries people. Sony and amd seem to have cooked up a nice design for the ps4 and I cant wait to see what this thing can do.

The only wrong they've committed, for me thus far, is the fact the PS4 cant play ANYTHING but PS4 games. Though I'm sure it will come later, but that still sucks.

For playing older games they will work out something, native support would be highly desireable.
As for the box, it could be an actual box with 2 buttons and a drive tray for all I care. The controller will be key, I think the share button nails it.

When Mark Cerny showed all that passion about the PS4, I believe him. I think the PS4 is going to be thee system to own. Even though developers have said that the PS3 was hard to develop for, look at what that system is capable of. Look at the specs and then see what it can do. There is no doubt in my mind that the PS4 is going to be amazing.

To all the people complaining about Sony not having showed the console itself: I guess we weren't supposed to see ANY hardware. The only reason we saw the controller is because there were some leaked pictures so they had to come out with it and show it to us.

Do you really think they'd show the REAL good stuff before E3? NO WAY! Imagine that... Sony shows controller+CONSOLE+much more games on February 20th --> all people are hyped for Microsoft at E3, NOT Sony. But Sony is in an advantage at the moment. They told us that there IS a PS4, showed the new controller and some software. And that's okay and more than enough. Then at E3 show the real deal. Blow us away with an amazing but simple design, great tech and stunningly beautiful games. Why? Because Microsoft will do exactly that. So Sony must not waste their "ammo" before E3.


Btw, it doesn't matter if we're happy with the specs or not. They won't change it, no matter what we say. But I'm quite happy. The only thing so far that I think COULD be better is the CPU, but I guess it's quite good and sufficient. 8gigs of ram - great. But I took it as "the 8GB of GDDR5 RAM will be used by the CPU and GPU" - right? Or is there a dedicated RAM JUST for the GPU? Because someone said that there will be additional RAM for the GPU. If that was true, it would mean that the GPU itself has its own RAM BUT can access the 8GB GDDR5 system memory. But I don't believe that there's additional GPU RAM. Just the 8gigs GDDR5.

I always thought that "GDDR" types of RAM is only available for GPUs, or am I missing something?

No, just NO! The RSX had ~170 Gflops performance. The PS4 GPU has ~1.84 Tflops performance. That's 11x the theoretical performance. Add to the that the PS4 gpu is based on the next AMD architecture, the GCN2, that makes it a LOT more efficient and the gpu in the PS4 should have REAL world performance of more than 15x of that of the PS3 gpu! (this is just my opinion, from what i know the RSX is based on a 7800GTX which has 165Gflops theoretical performance)

p.s. it's the radeon 8000 series that's based on.

I thought the RSX had around 400 GFLOPS of performance (theoretical)?!
