Rumor: PS4 CPU To Be Clocked At 2 GHz Instead Of 1.6 GHz

We’ve got an interesting bit of news regarding the PlayStation 4 CPU. The AMD-made processor will have a final clock speed of 2 GHz. So far the CPU has been underclocked at 1.6 GHz for development kits sent out to various developers.

Previous leaks put the clock speed at 1.6 GHz, but that was for development kits. The final clock speed for the 8-core AMD CPU will be bumped up 2 GHz according to our source. On top of that, the source reports that both the CPU and the GPU will be manufactured at 28nm at GlobalFoundries’ Fab 8 in New York — GlobalFoundries is co-owned by AMD. A desktop version of the “Jaguar” CPU will be available later this year.

The custom chip in the PlayStation 4 includes both the CPU and GPU — both components are made by AMD. The 8-core CPU is based on the upcoming “Jaguar” design, while the GPU is based on the Radeon 7000-series and is capable of 1.84 TFLOPS of processing power. That’s about 4.5x more powerful than the PS3 GPU.
    Source

    Well.....let's hope this is true!

    Cool if its true

With 8gb gddr5, a potentially 'overclocked' jaguar cpu, wouldn't it get hot in that $#@!?

I wonder if it will have an external power supply like the initial PS2 slims

The Jaguar is made for laptops. They are designed for low power consumption which means they run cooler. My guess is that is the whole reason Sony picked it for the PS4.

While true, bear in mind that normal Jaguar configuration is 4 Jaguar cores @ 1.6Ghz, not 8 Jaguar cores @ 2.00Ghz.

Still, I don't think it will present a thermal problem.

Also, I'm already dubious of the source's veracity, although a gentleman by the name of "Mike R" at B3D and Neogaf stated that the final clock could be 2.00Ghz or 1.8 Ghz otherwise, given that they're reporting that the RSX's peak performance figure as 400gflops.

    http://ps4daily.com/2013/02/playstat...-than-ps3-gpu/

As I recall, it was nowhere near that.

If Sony's engineers could get Cell into a box with it's excessive heat issues and have little to no problems, I'm sure they will get Jaguar into Ps4 without issues even at 2Ghz.

I like the other rumor about the gpu being based on 8xxx series.

    This is cool though.

Someone needs to start the rumor that the cell BE is soldered underneath, running the whole show giving the ps4 6 gflops.

Or did I just do that, lol..

Seems like the big leaks are going to come from GDC Mar. 25, since the devs are going to be able to talk all about next gen hardware. So, we know now that alpha kit has been out for awhile, no doubt beta kits will be in some hands by then.

"while the GPU is based on the Radeon 7000-series and is capable of 1.84 TFLOPS of processing power. That’s about 4.5x more powerful than the PS3 GPU"

No, just NO! The RSX had ~170 Gflops performance. The PS4 GPU has ~1.84 Tflops performance. That's 11x the theoretical performance. Add to the that the PS4 gpu is based on the next AMD architecture, the GCN2, that makes it a LOT more efficient and the gpu in the PS4 should have REAL world performance of more than 15x of that of the PS3 gpu! (this is just my opinion, from what i know the RSX is based on a 7800GTX which has 165Gflops theoretical performance)

    p.s. it's the radeon 8000 series that's based on.

I thought the RSX had around 400 GFLOPS of performance (theoretical)?!

    Floating Point Operations: 400.4 Gigaflops (24 * 27 Flops * 550 + 8 * 10 Flops * 550)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSX_%27...Synthesizer%27
As i said, i just did a quick google search for the 7800 series (which the RSX is based on) and that's the first number i found. I did a better search now and this is what i found:
    http://www.hardware-infos.com/grafikkarten_nvidia.php
    7800 GTX 110 nm 16-24-24-8 430/600 256 Bit 10,3 GT/s 200 Gflops
    7900 GTX 90 nm 16-24-24-8 650/800 256 Bit 15,6 GT/s 301 Gflops

Looking at the RSX specs in the wiki link it looks like the PS3 GPU's performance is somewhere between the 7800 and the 7900gtx. But it depends on how reliable that info is. It certainly isn't 7900gtx quality, so it should be under it. Even so, PS4 GPU is an immense step up and certainly more than just "3.5x" that of the PS3.

That is certainly correct. It is common knowledge that the xbox360 GPU (Xenos) is faster than the RSX adn Xenos only gets 220Gflops. RSX is about the same (slightly less) and the actual usable/programmable real world flops are even less.

Trust me, the real world jump is between 8x - 10x

Guess if the PS4 does pull off those GigaFLOPS then it will be quite an increase in power!

Bloody hell! the next person who mentions this!! It's the other guys who had the inadequate cooling system for one. 2 If it's that over yalls heads that custom or not this was meant as the driving force for mobile platforms, ie, it wont need and industrial meat freezer inside just to keep your house from feeling like you're in the core of super nova!!!!!!

One of the article comments seems to debunk this rumor:

This article is completely incorrect. The PS4 APU is being fabbed at TSMC 28 nm bulk process. The Jaguar core was chosen(more like forced onto SCEI) because the PS4 APU is being fabbed at TSMC, even though SCEI's preference was for the Piledriver cores which could only be fabbed at IBM and GF's SOI fabs. The Jaguar cores are at the moment incompatible with the IBM/GF's process. It is Microsoft's Durango chipset that is being fabbed at IBM/GF's SOI fabs, not the PS4 APUs. One more thing, AMD sold off its GF stake a long time ago.

I was wondering if the processor piece and the graphics piece had to run at the same frequency or not. I've been waiting to see more detail on that front. I'd also like to know what the RAM is clocking at. I'll probably have to wait until E3 to get that kind of info though.. Or GDC.
