[UPDATE] EA CFO: PS4 games may cost $69.99 near launch

Ugh! I don't like the sound of this. What the hell happened to all that news of .99-$60. I guess we have to just wait this out. I don't know why they would go down after the launch but I guess we will see. This ain't the N64!

At a Morgan Stanley investor webcast moments ago, Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen indicated that next-gen video games may retail for $69.99, $10 more than the current retail norm of $59.99.
Jorgensen was asked about a possible increase in retail costs for PS4 and Xbox 720 games and mentioned that such an increase has happened in every generation, followed by a slight decline in prices as each generation runs its course. In order to cover transitional costs for "Gen4" development, Jorgensen expects that next-gen video games will retail for $69.99 for some time, before the market dictates a slight decrease back to the current $59.99 standard.

    UPDATE:
UPDATE: Polygon has obtained comment from an EA representative on Jorgensen's statements. According to EA's rep, Jorgensen meant to characterize a general trend of declining retail prices over the course of a console generation, and that he intended to use $59 and $49 as examples, not $69.99 and $59.00.

Very true. Honestly they could put the price at $69.99 if they wanted to. I'm sure it would start a trend sadly. I would be pissed though.

This sounds odd. This sounds like something they really want too. I wont support EA games if EA prices them this high.

I'll go with what Tretton said, 99cents up to 59.99.

It probably won't happen. Even if it does, I'll just wait for the price to drop. Steam has spoiled me, and I won't pay 60$ for a game anymore, much less 70 damn dollars.

EA can suck a **** and that goes for any other publisher thinking about pulling this bullshit.

Oh I know! Steam has ruined me wanting to buy games new. It takes a part of my soul everytime I swipe my card for $65 plus on a new PS3 game.

HAH! I remember when cartridge games cost that much :P

Still think they won't do it, though. Unless, of course the whole "no used games" thing is true and they really think they can get away with murder.

Damn I'm glad someone remembers the arms and legs they gave up for N64 games! That was the first financial raping I received in life.

They cost close to that much in the UK, if you do not shop around that is.

    $69.99 = £46

    Game.co.uk want £43 for Crysis 3.

Do not like. I would definitely start waiting for games because I think $60 is too much for many currently released games. Guess we will wait to hear more..

Yep. I only pay full price for games that I extremely want. I can't part with $60 that easy these days.

I don't recall PS3/360 games having a transitional cost (starting higher price then stabilizing at a lower price later on) at the beginning of this gen; which is what he is basing his assumption that games will be more expensive on.

Do you think it will only happen for the PS4 games? If true? lol muahhahaha.

Yea if it is high like that then I'm getting a bomb ass computer and going steam.

I've been contemplating between next-gen and a high end PC.

And this as a possibility is exactly why I will not buy a PS4 right away. I'm not going to pay $70 and then another $15 for DLC. That's BS. I love gaming but I'm not made of money. I would wait for price drops.

I usually just wait for the games to come out with yearly editions with at least some DLC or most of it...and I prefer it on the disc, that way once i'm done playing it, I sell it.

If I find it useful, I keep it...thus why I still have BF3 and a few others. The rest, I sell them.

I guess the mothereffers at EA just want to raise the standard and make more money, whenever games reach $80-$100 gaming can be declared officially dead.
