I wouldn't doubt that the DS3 will work.

    D-pad and 'X'

I have a hard time recalling what if any games that I currently play that really use the Start and Select buttons anymore. You also have to remember that the touch sensitive pad in the middle of the controller is also supposed to be clickable!

I know plenty of games that use it. Almost every game uses start to pause the game. I'm sure the touch pad will be used for it as well. I'm sure right side click will be used for start and left for select but I think that might be a bit awkward. But I'm sure they will develop around it well.

They will figure out some way without it, I have thought the start/select buttons were getting dated already, so it was no surprise to me to see them go! You could always use the PS button to pause the game as well, which I think pretty much does on games now!

Yeah it kind of sucks because between my gf and I we have 4 DS3s. At least my two Move controllers will work.

I am very impressed by the PS4. Mostly impressed by the hardware and controller. I skipped out on the PS3, so I feel good.

That's bizarre since it seems unlikely that every game will require the extra features the DS4 has to offer (Move sensor and Touch pad).

MAbe a firmware update down the line will give us DS3 support down the line ?

Any who, I want more info on that second chip!! So far all I found was some nearly random speculation that it might be ARM based. Otherwise I was fully enthralled!!!

I don't get not supporting DS3, don't get it at all. It wouldn't be hard for PS4 games to just point to SELECT as the share button and START as the options button. So you lose the touchpad.... so what

For all the good things about consoles this is probably the worst thing. Your old hardware and peripherals generally become useless. The only thing I can think of that hasn't is the old driving wheels from the PS2 days.

Two reasons I can think of, why they're doing that is 1) They believe the DS4 will give a fuller experience, maybe because it's more integrated with the OS? 2) They want to make more money on accessories...think Apple with the iPhone 5.

It very well could be an Apple moment but it could go either way. There may be more to the controller being full part of the whole experience that it would inhibit the over experience with the DS3. It is dumb that you can't use it at all though. Would be nice to have for older games that the more simplistic style would be better for. This shows a full push away from the previous gen though for sure. Don't know if I like that.

Yes, that is the MMU daughter chip that will provide 4K for video and many other housekeeping functions. When the lead architect was talking about it very briefly, his eyes got a distant far seeing gaze. This MMU may start coming out of the fog during GDC.

Yeah if option 1 then they could have allowed it strictly as secondary controllers for multiple people playing on the same screen. Every PS4 is going to come with a DS4 so it could be responsible for OS features etc. Oh well I can't see them being much more than DS3 cost if not the same.

Common sense isn't all that common.

Somewhat impress, like the internal hardware not so much for the whole facebook/social network share stuff. Wireless charging is a plus, but need to know the price.
