But i love how much of an issue this is and how many of us actually prefer a female character over a male... I know a small % does

But it is enough to know i am not the only one weirdo in the bushes

I'm a guy, and most of my games have me playing as guys. But in fighting games, I usually pick the females (Sakura or Chun Li in SF, Zero Suit Samus in Smash Bros., etc.) because they are usually faster and more combo-driven and I don't care much about lower health or strength. Their moves also tend to have more finesse to them. If there are male characters like that, I'll pick them, too (Strider, Hayato, etc.), but it's pretty much a given that the female character will play that way in some fashion.

My point is that character attributes trump gender most of the time when I play a game. Video games, like movies, serve as a form of escapism into another world. As such, it doesn't matter much if we are in the world guided by a male or female. The main thing that matters is if the character in question interests us enough to be the central element of that world we want to get plugged into.

Case-in-point: The Boss, a female character, is being considered by Kojima to be the leading character in a new MGS (just an idea at this point). Many responses to that were extremely positive, including my own. I don't think any of them, who are likely males, care that she's a woman but rather a strong no-nonsense American hero who paved the way for Big Boss himself. Gender just isn't a primary concern these days.

Female characters tend to be quicker/more agile, and I prefer that play style to overpowered but slow.

Games are about roleplay, I sometimes don't want to project myself into a character and want to try something different.
