Gender Crossplay: Why do men play as women in video games (and vice versa)?

So I'm part of this project called Haywire magazine, it's a sort of indie, amatuer game magazine that you can view online. Our newest issue is covering the subject of player identity in games, and I wrote a piece that I thought would make for good discussion here on PSU. In it I examine a really interesting topic in gaming today: Gender crossplay. As someone who habitually rolls the opposite sex in video games, I'm curious as to what others have to say on the subject and about their own preferences. Men playing as women, women playing as men -- why does it happen and what's the appeal?

My personal reasoning for rolling female is below, you can either check the mag version out or read the forum formatted version. And if you do check out the mag, any feedback on the layout or content is appreciated, because it's only our 3rd official release! There's also a bunch of other great insights on the subject of player identity in games throughout the publication, and a lot of well written articles/interviews in general so keep it around for your reading pleasure. My article is on page 6, btw.

But yeah, how does everyone feel about the crossplay?

It's probably just a basis of self-perspective. Some people prefer feminine traits over masculine, whether in physical form or attitude. Combined with a bit of sexual want and creating an appealing persona of your own, it's not too difficult to see why some men may play as women when they can (or women as men). Society is usually backwards and unfair when it comes to us displaying anything beyond what is expected of our gender, so naturally some may seek ways in more personal settings such as video games.

Sometimes they are faster and more agile and that suits my style of play, Taki in Soul blade for example.
Also in HL2DM the female models are slightly smaller and their footsteps are not quite as loud so are harder to hear by the enemy.

    Summed up very nice.

I use to prefer women, but as customizing became deeper and RPG evolved into massive character building depths combined with romances I switched to men for my first play through and women for the rest sometimes alternating.

Does it really matter at all, the end result you are playing something you enjoy...Even if you play as Human male or female, Alien male or female or any or living creatures. As long as you are enjoying the gaming experience

Without thinking on any game if I had the choice I would always automatically go for a male. It's only been recently when I did a play through of mass effect 2 as female Shepard that I thought about doing it with other games. I now tend to alternate between playing as males and females in different games.

I didn't mean to present it as accusing anyone of anything, it's just an interesting phenomenon. There isn't a positive or negative stance to take here, I just thought it was interesting.

I do not think you came across as acusing anyone. It is actual an interesting topic.

The only real scary things of guys playing females is in MMO when they pretend to be one irl, even having pictures and stuff and flirt with other guys to get free stuff.

I am not having ago friend, just that the appeal and feelings you have towards the character be male or female is important for your journey together through the game...

Never did that, I played uncharted multiplayer but never used Chloe or the other girl. The same for Rainbow six Vegas, gta4 and socom 4...It always attracts weirdos that'll hump your body or send you messages thinking you're a female

Will I play a single player game with a female lead character? Yes, but for multiplayer, no!

When I play a game I consider my avatar as not being myself, but a companion. The best games I find are the ones I can identify with the character, perhaps creating a sort of relationship with him/her.

So I find female characters more interesting. Not sure if it's because I'm tired of being the big, dumb guy, or I'd rather have a girl as a companion, or I just feel a greater need to protect my character when it's a girl.

And something weird, when I create a female character I'll try to make her look pretty. Not sexy, but pretty. But when I create a guy I'll try to him give the most ridiculous look. I'm particularly fond of green hair and bright pink shirt, and being either super skinny or super fat.

It's a breath of fresh air to play as something else to me. The male characters are usually stereotypical huge ass behemoths... it's more interesting sometimes to watch some tiny little character beat the shit out of things.

I like a strong female character. I played the entire ME series as female Sheppard and grew to like my Sheppard. I was a rogue most of the time so it's refreshing to have a very strong female lead. Strong males are typical and boring to me so if I have a choice, I go female.

In ME2 I choose to punch this annoying new reporter in the face(the rogue option) and that was extremely satisfying to see her do that instead of a he. We need more female leads in games as well I believe. There are some I know that but I want to see that more.

    Spot on response.

I play as females when I have the choice because most games don't have a female lead.

And I'd rather play the 3 mass effect games and countless RPGs looking at lady butt instead of man ass
