I don't hate Crash, I loved Crash.
My point is just that you don't need a character to be a mascot. And Crash had little to none.
Mario started out with no character as well.
edit: Also, I would like a Knack skin for LBP2. Would go so well.

The problem I have with Knack in comparison to characters like crash is that his design doesn't appear to give any flexibility with expressions and emotions. His face in base form appears very static in what they've shown.
I find this disappointing considering its for the next generation. Saying its early 2000 pixar stuff doesn't mean the protagonist is automatically mascot worthy.
Again we're all judging from what little has been shown so my opinions could easily change but my current impression is not good. Particle physics etc aside his character feels generations behind to me :/
Edit: also I don't agree with the comparison to early mario. That was decades ago. If you want to compare to mascots compare knack to the most recent ones that have all been on inferior consoles.

A static face does not preclude you from being a mascot in the least.
The ability to emote, is not a prerequisite, and has never been.
The Energizer Bunny, is a mascot, it does not emote.
Crash has no character. Mario started out with none and barely has one even now.
All that is important is that the character has to have a distinctive enough presence, and nothing can guarantee how something will be received until it has actually been widely exposed enough to see for ourselves.
As for Knack, it looks like his eyebrow parts can move, and his mouth seems like it can move too. That's enough for basic emoting, along with the fact that he can gesture with his hands. Not much more is needed.
Knack looks 'cute' enough in my opinion to get the job done, but we will see.

Seriously guys....when has Sony ever had a true mascot? They've had a bunch of characters linked to their systems but they've never pushed for a mascot, what makes you guys think that's gonna change?

Crash was never appointed as a mascot by Sony, for example (its not as if Sony ever truly owned him or Spyro anyway), but it simply became linked as such in people's minds to Playstation.
The point is it doesn't really matter. It's just arguing semantics. People saw Crash as a mascot for PS1, and thus in their minds he was.Last edited by RedOrb_Collector; 03-04-2013 at 04:39.

I don't see any hate for the game as a platformer in this thread.
My comments are directed at the main character's design and not seeing the mascot qualities in him, the game looks great itself
I think others that may seem like hating are just more interested in killzone, deep down, infamous etc which is fine too; doesn't mean they hate platformers.

I personally think having a mascot is bad anyway, it means things start getting bogged down too much. Just look at Nintendo and the amount of Mario games, and they are releasing the same "New" Super Mario Brothers game every couple of months.

it looks ok doesnt say me much though as im not fan of anything Pixar related. The ingame gameplay that was shown of Knack looked like a mix between "My katamari" games and top down scrolling shoot em up (ie. more like Gatling Gears than shooters) it will be one of the few games that im interested in seeing how it developes till the launch day though due to being a new IP along with (The Witness/DeepDown)

I fucking love it. The design of the city and machinery gives me a strong Mega Man Legends feel. Probably my favorite
Mega Man game, and one I still own the CD for.
Mark Cerny described the gameplay as part Crash Bandicoot, God of War and Katamari Damacy. That's too odd of a combination too ignore, I'm sold.

It certainly does a good job of showing off the power of PS4, all the little bits and pieces all on screen at once is awesome.
I wouldn't say Knack is mascot material though, you need something SPECIAL for that, i'd say Sackboy and Nathan Drake is as close to a mascot as Sony has right now.
