via VG247.Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli has stressed that the idea of closed, single-player only games must be culled moving forward. That’s not to say he doesn’t want single-player games to vanish, they simply must evolve. See what he means by that below the cut.
It’s no secret that Crytek views the free-to-play, multiplayer market as valuable. In fact Yerli recently stated that he expects Crytek to go full free-to-play within five years.
Now, in an interview with IGN, Yeri said, “I think the notion of a single-player experience has to go away. However, I’m not saying that there will be no single-player experiences… It could be called Connected Single-Player or Online Single-Player instead.”
Immediately I’m thinking of Guild Wars 2 and Bungie’s Destiny; single-player games set in MMO worlds that allow for interaction with multiple players, should a person wish to engage them.
Yerli continued, “Online and social can reignite single-player in a new type of context and provide benefits that will make you want to be a part of a connected story-mode rather than a disconnected story-mode.
“Sure, if the technology forces you to play a traditional single-player game online, that doesn’t make sense but if it’s offering actual benefits to be online then you want to be part of it.”
Yerli also said that The Walking Dead would be more profitable on Crytek’s Gface free-to-play network than any other format. What do you make of that?
As if to imply single-player games are broken? I don't even...

The notion of Crytek's existence needs to go away.

They are just pissed because they spent 66 million dollars on a game that had only a 5 hour long single player and its multiplayer is a CoD clone with Crysis suits.

Crytek...I'm a PC gamer first and foremost...and you make me SMH more often than not. Shut up and step up with the games.

The notion that CEOs knows what they are talking about needs to go away. Especially in the gaming industry.

This is the only company that when I hear they have something to say, I don't know what they said, but I do know that when I find out, it's like they kicked me and others who consider themselves gamers, in the testicles. This is why I have never and will never buy a Crytek game.....EVER!

What a stupid thing to say. Single player is the best part of the game for me.
Although, they should give you the option of doing the full single player story in co-op. I don't know if it's because I don't play FPS much anymore but I rarely see them. Something like Borderlands 2.

No single player = my interest in your game is less than zero. Crysis 3, if I get it, may very well be my last Crytek game at this rate.

lol wut?
This must be a 13-yaer old boy playing COD on his 2,479th prestige notion of gaming. As much as I am a "hater" (or rather pretty much non-participator) of MP gaming; I believe it has its place.
Getting rid of SP gaming is a huge huge mistake, and people will likely just stick to Sports and mobile gaming if that were the case (if any).

I agree with Crytek. There have been so many single player games that I wish has had online support for gaming with others. Games like Infinite Undiscovery would have been epic if it had 2-3 player co-op during the castle sieges, each player controlling their own set of four characters. Those castle sieges were so awesome with all 16 of your total characters going forward and yourself acting as just one part of the whole joint operation. It's a grand feeling that would have felt more grand if a co-op team came in to help your co-op team.

I don't mind whatever single-player evolves into...as long as it's not forced. I like traditional single-player gaming; I'd rather not want to be forced to have other players get in the way of a solo experience that is at my complete control and leisure.

Any games company that focuses solely or preferentially on multi-player over single player for this upcoming generation WILL NOT live to see the following generation. They will effectively be shutting out 80% of gamers who do at least play single player games or games with a single player element. As I am one of the 80%, at the very least, I will ignore said games and may even ignore the company in its entirety if said company goes solely or preferentially multi-player. I did it with the creators of MAG, COD and others and I will not hesitate to do again.

If the notion of a single player experience ever goes away, well then so does my love for gaming...
What these developers need to start doing is making 2 versions of a game. Start selling single player only discs for $30, and multiplayer only discs for $30.
Seeing how I almost NEVER play games online, I would save myself quite a bit of money. Problem solved.Last edited by Lethal_NFS; 03-04-2013 at 15:44.
