Hey...I LOVE KillZone. Don't make me post pics of my Helghast CE
Anyways...it does look really good at 30fps, but it often jarringly drops to less than that. If it was rock solid 30fps it would be much less noticeable. And by noticeable I mean not only visually but in controller response (which is intrinsically linked to frame rate)
It's just a simple fact: higher frame rates=smoother animation and faster controller response.
So yeah: I'll take a higher frame rate over a lower one anyday. That's why I play most multiplats on PC.
(Of course fun triumphs visuals anyday also, that's why I have playstations. Can't get those exclusives anywhere else!)

This is what I do. Although reason being is that 720p is my TV's native res. It works out quite well though, I can play the likes of Crysis, Far Cry etc at high settings on a mid range card.
Problem with framerate on PC's is that for a lot of games you need an overpowered system just to achieve a smooth experience because of poor optimisation. Bouncing between 60fps and 45fps is horrible for example and in a lot of games I end up turning on v-sync and locking it at 30 just to get rid of the stutter

I'm building a monster because I NEED 1080p 60fps, and I'm sorry I have little faith the console will be able to do it. Though benchmarks showed it's possible to achieve solid 60fps at such res with certain AMD chips (I'm not about to look them up those who care have more than likely seen these) I do recall devs saying 30fps would still be common place

And yes I hav a soft spot for VIZUALSS!!!!Last edited by D3seeker; 03-05-2013 at 01:47.

Those that say they cannot tell the difference between 30 and 60 please watch these vids. They have been captured and encoded at 30 and 60FPS. 20MB each.
30FPS
60FPS
Indeed, Steam Survey somewhat confirms what you say 1920x1080 with 30% and 1366x768 with 20% the 2 most popular resolutions by far.

The N64 was underpowered even back then, it was OK for MArio but Goldeneye was pushing it, the framerate drops the moment you walked through smoke or spammed explosives and it was even more evident how underpowered it was when Perfect Dark released which needed the 8MB memory exapnsion to play the single player.
But like you said it was fun.
Low framerates annoy me thesedays, playing Half life 2 on th eorange box for PS3 was hideous, it was like looking at a slide show.Last edited by keefy; 03-06-2013 at 08:55.

People who game at those resolutions are most likely because they're low on budget or their monitor doesn't support higher resolutions.
Right now you can play ANY game at 1080p on a mid-end PC, let alone high end. Resolution in that range doesn't affect framerates as much as Tessellation Post-processing, complex shadowing and other effects. In other words, few people prefer sacrificing resolution over certain graphical settings that impact performance more. 720p is soo annoying even with high AA applied. (which, depending on the geometry, could easily eat up much more performance than resolution)
It's at resolutions above 1080p however, when framerates start dropping dramatically, even in high-end setups. That's where SLI and Crossfire come into the picture.... which leads me to take a little jab at 4k gaming... which isn't happening this gen of Consoles or single GPU PCs... on a decent looking game that is.

60fps and 720p, now that I wouldn't mind. Let film and television work at 24 and 30fps, but games should be at 30-60fps, more so towards 60fps. Everything just looks smoother. I'm willing to sacrifice some gfx for smoother gameplay that'll keep me coming back.

I'm not talking dollars here. Most LED TV's I see around are in the £400 bracket. 32-37", nothing too big.
Can't say it's an area of expertise for me though, I'm sure I'll make a thread on here for advice on refresh rates and response times and whatever when the time comes.

you quoted me but like I just said, if you add high end lighting effects with AA and other such configs, you are going to want to bring down your resolution otherwise your game will get hiccups. lets not forget draw distance in PC games. If you are playing at 1920x1200 or 1080p with a huge draw distance, your game will stutter. that is why most people I know that game on the PC which are on my list of friends most of them game at a much lower resolution which is still crystal clear which in turn they can get a better draw distance, much more AA, etc etc.
