After watching people gaming on Justin tv live I was looking into a capture kit iv saw one's from 6 pound to 100 pound. Now all I work on Is a Ps3 and a laptop could I still get a capture kit to work?

You can use an HD PVR 1212 from Hauppauge. As long as you have the laptop, PS3, and a tv.

Are there self contained devices that have their own hard drives, so a computer doesnt have to be next to your console?

It's a shame there ain't just a free program online somewhere or at least some software. So you can do it straight from your pc/laptop with just some additional wires.
