http://www.psu.com/a018613/Report--S...able-at-launchAccording to sources from the companies making PS4 components, Sony is aiming to have 16 million PlayStation 4 units available at launch this year, with component shipments happening sometime in August.According to the DigiTimes, the aforementioned sources have detailed that Foxconn Electronics and Pegatron Technology are manufacturing the console, with the beginning phase having already started. Once August arrives, the components will do the same, and full-scale console production will begin.
By the looks of it, Sony isn't playing around with PS4's launch and wants to ensure that everyone who wants a next-gen console will get one--a stark contrast to stifled console and technology launches of recent years. Tell us what you think of this move in the comments below. Will you be in line for a PS4 on launch day?
Nice news if this is true. I just wonder how many countries that will involve. Hopefully there wan't be a shortage this time around, like every console release. I don't know what the current gen consoles shipped with but this sounds pretty good.

This is Digitimes getting confused again. Sony just had a news release they expect to ship 16 million PS3's during 2013, not PS4's. The rest of the article is probably close with the RFP timeline. A million for launch sounds more like it.

Really, does anyone really think we're going to see 16M PS4's sold during the 2013 Holiday season. I'd be impressed if they got up to that number by the end of the 2014 Holiday season. The first year is always one of the slowest. They always do cost reduction spin around mid-way through the first year - building up volume on this to release before the next holiday season. I can see somewhere in the 5-10M for the first round before re-spin of the PS4, no more when you're going to have the likes of XBOX720 sitting there alongside to compete with.
Plan for 5M, prepare to be able to ramp for 10M if demand is there, but they're not going off the deep end and building or stock piling parts to build 16M. That's just F'ng insane.

16million is really high. Didn't Sony say they wanted 400,000 for PS3's launch and didn't even make that full number by the release date?

Sony is talking about PS3 numbers for the coming end of their fiscal year 2012 and their beginning fiscal year 2013 on April 1, 2013. They are commenting on sales just before the end of their fiscal year, basically the PS3 sold around 15 million in FY12 and the projection is to sell 16 million in FY13. Digitimes was also the one that said Sony had 20 million PS4's in production over two years ago. Talking about jumping the gun.

Yeah, sounds like a pretty bogus story. Personally, I'm hoping for at least 1million at launch for each region.

Urgs Foxconn. I hear bad things about them. They manufacture Ipod and Ipad components too and treat their workers like slaves. Even suicides are no exceptions. Not good that Sony use them but i guess that´s the deal for us who living in the west to get affordable new shiny technologies. :/

You mean each region: North America, Japan, and Eurozone. There aren't any major fab issues this time around, although this APU is stretching existing capability.
It could also be the statement was misinterpreted as 16 million for the year, even though starting mid-fiscal year for Sony. Considering PS3's are selling about 15 million to 16 million right now, it may not be that extreme to define the first year as the launch and it sounds like the PS4 is going to get a lot of the hard core market back.

03-23-2013 #23No thank you. I'll be gaming DRM free on a stronger console for $100 cheaper instead

Sony trolled MS. PS4 fans didn't do it. We just laughed at MS and anyone getting mad. $399 FTW!

If Sony prices there system at a decent price I can see then moving many many units within the first year and if there launch line up is impressive including the first year well let's just say I believe they will be back on top. Xbox I used to like you but I wouldn't be sad to see you executed.
