via GameSpot.PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 games will likely cost $70, according to a presentation at South by Southwest this weekend from Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter (via the Twitter feed of Geoff Keighley).
This is a $10 increase over the current-generation sticker price of $60 and does not match up with past commentary.
Last month, SCEA CEO Jack Tretton in a TV interview said that PlayStation 4 titles will max out at $60, putting to rest any speculation that games for Sony's future platform may cost $10 more than PlayStation 3 titles.
Microsoft has yet to announce its rumored next-generation platform.
Separately, Electronic Arts chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen said last month that the FIFA and Battlefield publisher has not yet decided on pricing for its next-gen games.
Also during his talk, Pachter commented on the Wii U performance thus far and how he expects it to fare in the long run. He called performance thus far "underwhelming," noting the system is "essentially a DS split into two parts." Pachter said the Wii U is not innovative enough to drive wide interest, though new titles could reinvigorate growth in the platform.
Overall, Pachter said he believes the Wii U will sell 30-50 million units in its lifetime, with the PS4 and Xbox 720 going neck-and-neck, selling 85-95 million systems over their lifespans. By comparison, the original Wii has sold 99 million units to date, while the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have moved around 75 million units each.
Echoing comments from Twisted Metal and God of War designer David Jaffe, Pachter said he believes the next generation of consoles is "probably" the last.
Let's pretend for a moment that Pachter is right about next-gen games being priced at $70. These better be some damn good games. No single-player campaigns that can be completed in 5-6 hours, bare-bones gameplay mechanics or content (cosmetic or otherwise) stripped for DLC.

Welcome to the rest of the world in pricing US.

Paying a video game $70 is clearly no-buy for me..The only games I bought to PS3 on release was Uncharted 3 and One Piece Pirate Warriors. If they price $70 then It will be around 5 games on release next gen at most.
Lol 60$ is cheap for us game usually around 99$ in Turkey, max payne was 110$ .

I really hope this isn't true. $60 puts a big enough hole in my wallet as it is... Very rarely do I buy games new, or without some kind of store credit or trade-in.
If this is true, I'll be doing more waiting next gen than playing. Waiting for price drops that is...__________

Let me get my math correct in chronological order; Last month (and the article meniotns this near the top), Trettton said this won't happen:
Yet Pachter, a month after, is disagreeing....? Is he the one setting prices now or am I missing something?Last month, SCEA CEO Jack Tretton in a TV interview said that PlayStation 4 titles will max out at $60, putting to rest any speculation that games for Sony's future platform may cost $10 more than PlayStation 3 titles.

Patcher sure makes unsurprising claims. I mean, even I would guess that next-gen games might go up $10, or that WiiU is underwhelming, or that PS3 is probably gonna drop in price, etc. You don't really need extensive research to find these possibilities. It gets to the point where it doesn't matter if he's right. They aren't shocking claims in the first place.
Has he guessed that Microsoft might announce a new console yet? lolLast edited by Bio; 03-12-2013 at 07:19.

Great. And this just means Australian pricing will go from 80-110 to 90-120.
Can't fucking wait.
Edit - Will just have to find better deals on eBay I suppose.Last edited by Windwalker; 03-12-2013 at 10:30.

That Jack Tretton guy already said games are not going up $10, I will take his word over Michael Pachter.

Pachter is like the weatherman. Few people get paid so much for being consistently wrong.

I would be willing to pay $70 only if the game was of such high quality that it deserved it. Uncharted series comes to mind. Otherwise wait for a price drop.

$70 for a game is not that bad. I remember paying $60 for Mortal Kombat 3 on the SNES. I also remember paying $100 for Wave Race 64 when it first released.
