Before I continue, I want to say that I do think it's a neat idea but do not think it would be practical for these forums. From what I'm reading above, honestly it sounds like a trap. Not trying to downplay your idea. Think about it, you get someone who's passionate and want them to vent out, is it not more likely that they will go ahead and use derogatory language?

And if they're civil enough to not go down that path, how is the regular forums any different?

The difference being that The Melee is a break from the rules and regulations set in place in other parts of PSU. It's a chance for you to truly vent your rage at a topic you're passionate about without fear of being banned for speaking your mind. PSU, while being a great community, doesn't allow you to go 'all out' when discussing something. The Melee would allow you to do so. Of course, you will get the odd member or two who will choose to ignore the rule about no derogatory terms -- in that instance, then an instant ban would be a suitable punishment. Or maybe an infraction for first-time offenders. I guess it all depends on how offensive the derogatory language is. Of course, anything that's said in The Melee STAYS in The Melee; if they carry the argument out of there on to other parts of PSU, punishment will occur.

So you say that this way the threads aren't derailed. Well, maybe the reason why the thread is being derailed or a hot discussion is going on because of the thread...once you take that away, I see no motivation for them to continue on, especially when no one else is going to care enough to go down that section just to see them bicker more.

I see no reason why the original topic could carry on. Use this as an example; X makes a comment in a thread about the next presidential election. They bring up something related to the last election that Y doesn't agree with, something that while related to the thread, can be seen as straying off topic. Y can then take this to The Melee to debate with X, and anyone else who wishes to discuss that subject on a more personal level, to keep the original thread from going downhill. X doesn't have to respond, of course, but the chance for them to discuss that one particular topic -- or even each others opinion of one another - is there for the taking. X and Y can use the thread created in The Melee to 'duke it out' and just blow some steam without being banned.

What is a forum when you can't discuss amongst everyone? Isn't the entire point we come here is to voice our opinions in front of dozens (used to be hundreds) of fans?

Otherwise you'd be left with a bunch of "I agree/I disagree" but no one actually coming forth with a discussion.

That's where the rule about about having actual content to your post comes in. The Melee is NOT a place to be spammed with 'lol tit' posts; it's a place for heated debates/discussions/arguments. If you're going in there, you do so knowing that there are no bars held in there and that unless you have some sort of padding to your post, you WILL end up losing the debate. The Melee is a place for you to 'one up' other members in heated discussions while blowing off some steam at the same time. It can and will work. I have seen it done firsthand.

Thing about that is, while it may be effective in a situation where you have people like that...I haven't seen anything here that would warrant that, are there any two people you know that have it so bad that they need to open a thread about it?

Actually, yes, I can name a few people who have had 'beef' with one another. I won't name there here. Maybe if The Melee were to happen, I'd do so in there.

Quite clearly not, as I already have two admins fairly interested in the idea of giving The Melee a trial run. I don't see why everyone is so against this. You complain that PSU is too strict when it comes to speaking your mind and The Melee offers you the chance to do so and nearly all of you shoot the idea down. How about we give it a trial run before you jump ship and say no to it? Again, I've seen this done on other forums and it's worked brilliantly.

For those interested, here's an example of what could be posted in The Melee. It's not a perfect example by any means, but its a good indication of the kind of heated discussion that would be possible in The Melee that wouldn't be possible in other sections of the forum, due to the heated language used - as you can see, it's a chance for people to truly vent and blow some steam. The example used is about war but it can be about anything, really.

I'm 24 and I have a kid -- I fail to see how this has any relevance to being able to hold a conversation/have a debate but, well, I guess that's where you and I are different.

Well it also depends on various factors.

I was working constantly without any days off for 4 years straight (up until now). I have to watch my kid the moment I come home o the moment I leave to work because my wife is studying in college. I also have to do half of the household chores. My kid is extremely energetic and we don't have family in Texas so we don't get help.
