It's definitely disappointing that an opinion piece would make a committed PSU member decide to leave, and as the EiC here, I do feel bad about that. We definitely feel bad for alienating anyone and we always welcome feedback.
Now from my non editor stance... yeah, I pretty much hate playing online for all the racial and homophobic slurs. Teenagers are super cute like that, but it gets old fast. As for this being an America vs the World kind of thing... Really? (I'm an American adult--kid at heart--and have lived in other countries, but a damn proud American!) Did this opinion piece really hurt that much?
Stereotypes are dumb because they are usually true but also a bit too generous. No, not all American teenager gamers are homophobic or racist... but maybe the ones that are loud enough for the rest of us to get annoyed.
Thing I hate the most is playing with my British colleagues here at PSU and getting into verbal disagreements about the proper way to queue to buy fish and chips or fighting with my Montreal colleagues about why everything tastes better with gravy and cheese curds--No, poutine really isn't that great, get over it! Stereotypes are funny like that.

Funny. The only time I was followed/accosted for money on my travels in Europe was in your 5th safest city.
Meanwhile back home in the barbaric US, I have yet to face any trouble/be a victim of crime.
I'll take the gun loving population (that includes the swiss, you know), thank you very much.

You couldn't be more correct good sir!
Anecdotal point is anecdotal, being ranked one of the safest cities in the world by Mercer isn't. I have spent almost half a decade here and am yet to see even a fight break out. I have walked through pitch black parks alone in the middle of the night without a second thought. Stay over there by all means and I'll stay over here among a population that doesn't live in fear.
Anywho, I'm done here for the night. Good night all.

You count my experience as anecdotal yet you list your own anecdotal experience?
The thing you tend to forget is that no other country in the world has the population combined with the diversity (among other demographics) we do. The fact that we are even competitive with other developed countries around the world with smaller and/or less diverse populations is pretty damn remarkable.
And who said we live in fear?
One last thing, I don't know why you are fixated on gun ownership so much but if that really was a concern of yours than you should hold similar views on Switzerland. I'm pretty sure that isn't the case, which means that there must be other reasons for your opinions of the US. Don't just try to get away with it by citing one factor as the sole/main basis for your opinion.
Furthermore while you may not have lived in the US, have you even visited? Al least I have seen firsthand how other live across the pond, can you say the same?

I dont think the opinion piece drove him away so much as all the immature assholes that post on this site tbh (not just talking about the anti-US posts). Im sure you'll disagree since you click likes on some of their posts. I'm growing tired of this place as well. Too many posters here that are just too childish to respect each other. This place has changed and not for the better. I came to talk about gaming with likeminded people not bicker with trolls. I've got better things to do. So I guess I'm out of here too.

Clearly marked as an opinion article. Don't see much issue with that, if the article reflects the experience of the writer. The writer's views aren't also necessarily the views of PSU.
Plenty room to disagree and offer opposing experience/evidence (of which I could offer some, myself). I'd much rather an article and debate than the over-sensitive politically correct knee-jerk of trying never to offend anyone.
Keep writing articles that get people talking, PSU. Too many sites are a bland copy/paste of news written elsewhere.

@everyone saying "zomg interwebz welcome"
Let me ask you this, when you go to the sports page of a newspaper or a website you expect to read about whats going on in the world of sports. You do not expect to see an article "Why Europeans/American/Brazilians/ etc.. are ruining futbol(soccer)" It is the same for when I go the "news" section of a website for PlayStation. I want to hear about the gaming world and what is new, what directors are saying, etc. I do not go to see some article of how some demographic is ruining. The forum is completely different. I avoid those topics for a reason.
@Claud3
Are you ok man? I have never seen so much bipolar from you in a single thread. I mean you go from hating me, to liking me, then back to hating me.
@adamdolge
Um yeah it was another Americans are stupid and ruin everything article. I am baffled how you do not see it as such. I mean the title alone should be a big hint.
@radgamer420
You are right. This article was just icing on the cake of the animosity that has been building up with not only the inconsistency of rules(nope you can not say buttsex but we can blast it all over our front page). The rules being more inconsistent than a box of "mixed nuts"(one person gets banned for say trolling or spamming and another does not yet does same thing).
@Topgun
I hope it is a neon pink thong.
Maybe I did overreact. Yesterday was a bad day irl for me and seeing another article that didn't help my mood(we all days like this so don't lie and say you never do). Having said that I stand by what I said about the article. There was no need to point to a country and say "you ruined it for us".

@ Yuuichi. I have never hated you what so ever, I hate no one on the forum
My posts are about the subject at hand that is it, I would never hate you or anyone for their opinions on a subject this heavy,
You have misunderstood comments
Thanks to Spyrde/Sylar

You'll get stereotypical comments made towards your nationality regardless of where you live and what website you visit. It's just a 'done' thing. Americans are fat and dumb. The British are annoyingly posh and have wonky teeth. The French smell of shit and are all gay. Germans are -- well, you get the point. It's all meant as nothing more than banter. I may or may not have dabbled in stereotypical insults but that was a long time ago. 99% of the time, it's a joke. Maybe you need a break from the internet if words on a screen are actually offending you.
My personal opinions are not endorsed by PSU. But they should be.

Was wondering how long it would take Jaeger, who has in the past admitted he hates Americans, to slither his way into here. Looks like you only read thread title and nothing else as usual.
