Best God of War for a new PS3 user

Should I just jump into the newest one or does anyone recommend I start with a certain release first?

God of War Ascension is your best bet if you dont want to play PS2 remakes.

    The timeline order is:
God of War: Ascension (PS3, newest release)
God of War: Chains of Olympus (PSP, another developer made it)
    God of War (PS2)
God of War: Ghost of Sparta (PSP, another developer made it)
    God of War II (PS2)
God of War III (PS3, takes place directly after 2.. so you have to play 2 first)

God of War 1 & 2 are in the God of War Collection, Chains of Olympus & Ghost of Sparta are in the Origins Collection. You can easily skip the PSP games though.

I would seriously go by the timeline as listed here, and thus get Ascension first.

For a new PS3 user, you want to get a game that will show off the system. And Ascension is by far the best looking.

The PS2/PSP upscaled games--which are all of them other than God of War 3, look nowhere near as good.

God of War I, it's not the first chronologically but I'd still recommend starting with that one.

Unless you want discs for all the games, the PSP remakes are code. (I wanted disk so I had to go the more expensive route lol)

Yeah the codes are ass lol. I would have re-bought the series if they were all disc based in the Saga.

I grabbed the PSP ones off the Store when they were on sale, had to get GOW3 on disc because there was no digital version.

All the GOW games are awesome, but if you want pure epic awesomeness, God of War 3 is the one to go. But to get the story, just do the original trilogy (GOW 1, 2, and 3....obviously).

Yes. Ghost of Sparta and Chains of Olympus were originally for the PSP only, but Santa Monica took the two games and put them in HD and in one disc for the PS3.

I'd still play through the originally trilogy (1-3) before the PSP ones though.

As one of the biggest GOW fans on this planet, I will tell you this:

BUY the GOW Saga. It contains GOW1, GOW2 and GOW3, as well as the PSP-HD remakes for PS3 Chains Of Olympus and Ghost Of Sparta. You should play them all. GREAT games.

Buy Ascension too. It's not the best GOW game (GOW3 still holds the crown for me, followed by GOW2, then comes Ascension; although Ascension has the best combat mechanics etc.), but a damn good one nonetheless.

Just buy everything. Lol. If you HAVE to choose one, I'd say GOW3. But GOW3 can be found on the GOW Saga, so... no brainer. GOW Saga + GOW Ascension.

Play them in this order if you want the story to be told chronologially correct:

    Ascension --> Chains Of Olympus --> 1 --> Ghost Of Sparta --> 2 --> 3

You can also play the main trilogy first, followed by Chains Of Olympus and Ghost Of Sparta, and then Ascension.

But keep in mind that, although you'll see the story in it's correct chronological order, the games weren't developed and released in that order. They were released in this order: GOW1, GOW2, Chains Of Olympus, 3, Ghost Of Sparta, Ascension.

Why do I mention that? Because there are some moves/mechanics in the prequels that aren't in GOW1 - because it's the oldest one.
Kratos throws a grenade. Grenade kills 50 undead soldiers. Then the grenade explodes.

I got the best solution for you, if you go and purchase God Of War Ascension through www.gamestop.com you'll get God Of War Saga for free, that means:
    GOW 1
    GOW 2
    GOW 3
    GOW ghost of sparta
    GOW chains of olympus
    GOW ascension

    All for $60 bucks.

The Saga does not include Ascension.

The God of War Saga = $39.99
God of War: Ascension = $59.99

I would start in the order in which the games came out.
