so looking for a way to charge conroller without having to leave the PS3 on
tried a usb/AC converter like you get with an iPhone that does not work, plugged into MBP usb port as ive seen youtube videos online that that works, when i plug mine into my MBP i get a popup asking for bluetooth password i get use 12345 and the popup goes away but the red lights do not come on.
any suggestions other than buying an overpriced controller dock?

Try turning Bluetooth off on your MBP. My controller charges just fine on my 2011 15" MBP. I don't have BT turned on.

Might be your power settings.

I've been trying to replicate this and I can't do it on my MBP. I don't get a BT popup nor do I need to re-sync the controller to my PS3 Slim after charging. Can't really figure out what's wrong. Maybe it's the DS3, have you tried with another one?

no I havnt tried another but last night I noticed something but forgot to test, the PS3 controller is listed as a paired device with my MBP, im going to delete it from the paired list, and plug it in to see if it re-pairs hopefully it doesnt
my only guess is the controller only wants to be paired with one at a time

I've used my Macbook to charge while playing (and have also used the controller to play emulators on the laptop). The only annoying this is it then pairs to my laptop, so the next time I turn the controller on, I need to pair it with the PS3 again, so yeah, I guess that's normal.

just to follow up ive removed the pairing in my MBP bluetooth list and now it charges and stays synced with PS3 so most of originally synced it with the mBP without realizing it
