I think you can download your content up to 5 times.

I am not sure, so didn't answered, yet what I know you can download to same machine as much as you want yet you can download it to at most 2 ps3s. Yet this info needs to be clarified, since I am not so sure.

Try this progrm, it can determin i the drive is in good working order or not quickly.
Just plug the drive into your PC then install the program.

As far as i know you can downlod the games to the same PS3 as many times as you want.
Please abide by the signature file size limit. Thanks. ~ Staff

The content is limited to platforms/devices on your PSN/SEN account, NOT a limit as to how many times it can be downloaded. The old limit was 5 activated systems (including PSP) at one time, but this has since been changed to 3 plus two PSPs. But you can deactivate your PS3s and PSPs through the menu options, switch out your harddrive and reactivate the system on your account and re-download your games. If you have an external drive large enough that you can back up your games and data to, then you can save everything swap the drive and them restore everything to the new drive. The old drive will no longer be recognized so if you place it back in your PS3 it will ask you to format it, erasing all the games.

The Back up process only really works for swapping drives or restoring content to the old drive in case of corruption.

Best option would be to grab a large enough external HDD, use the backup utility of the ps3, then swap out the internal hdd, and restore from the backup, I won't lie, it's going to be a slow process, but as far as I know, the backup utility basically copies everything from the internal to the external hdd, this includes game data, games, savedata, music etc. If you think your hard disk is on its way out, then making a backup - even if you don't replace your internal hdd right away - would be a timesaver (not to mention the savedata) if/when your internal hard disk dies.
