    VGleaks: Evolution of PS4 hardware

    2011

    Early 2013

    There are 2 main differences:

    - The 4 cores have been “upgraded” to 8 cores (this time as we know they are Jaguar cores instead Steamroller)

    - RAM amount is still the same (4 GB, this change is very recent)

    - Almost all the speeds are “downgraded”.

    So now we have:

    - “Garlic” bus between GPU and Memory (176 GB/s)

    - “Onion” buses between GPU and Memory through CPU (10 GB/s shared)

    - CPU bus between CPU and Memory (less than 20 GB/s). The only one apparently untouched.
I wonder when a nuclear warhead goes off, does the frame rate of real life drop?

Downgrade confirmed. PS4 is teh suck. Sony lies!

Well only the steamroller -->Jaguar and 196GB/s --> 170GB/s are the downgrades afaik and they are more than welcome if it meants a cool, and affordable console.

Plus who gives a crap about numbers after the games we've already seen

LOL, I wasn't being serious I really like the direction Sony went with the PS4. It's going to be a beast of a system.

I know you weren't, but lets be honest, its only a matter of time someone will come actually being serious so I just posted that preemptively

As far as I know, parallelism is more important game-related processes (correct me if I'm wrong), that and the jaguar cores are supposedly much more energy efficient. I personally like the new direction, because Sony didn't skimp on the one thing that ensures true longevity : RAM. I just hope Sony can nail the launch price, $400 would be awesome for a machine like the ps4, and it'll put all the naysayers and graphics $#@!s (aka PC gamers with $1000 + rigs) in their place.

Don't worry about pc gamers. Whilst they are goin on with themselves about how underpowered the ps4 is compared to their $#@! cooled $#@! tower, we will be enjoying the machine and its games before you know it.

Well the Jaguar is still pretty underwhelming no matter how you spin it and a more powerful 4 core Bulldozer/Steamroller would have been a lot better. However, if that's the difference between a very quiet PS4 with low failure rates and a situation like this gen, I'm fine with that. I've had enough of broken consoles in my house and in the news. Let's hope they use proper solder this time too.

Although the rumours say the reason the CPU changed was entirely down to manufacturing locations

Yep. Faster that you can say "Crysis 4 coming, have to get a new graphics card!" I kid.

Exactly. I would have preferred they didn't go the Jaguar route, but I'm okay with it in the end. BTW.... low power doesn't mean no failures. They will happen. They will just be less likely.

It's decent hardware setup .... but people calling it a beast?! LOL! Neither this nor the Xbox 720 qualify as beasts. They will hold their own and get the job done though. Calling it a beast is as cliche and overstated as the overly used "megaton" announcement statements.

PS4 IS a beast compared to what some were speculating it to be. I think sony exeeded even dev expectations

those 2 are what the planned ps4 was going to be (and all rumors were based on those). We now see just how last minute 8gb was

Would it be "better" to upgrade the PS4 to a 4 core bulldozer at the expense of 4GB of DDR5?

no because of heat and power. Secondly games aren't CPU heavy. Better to invest in GPU

That's very true. You can still build a $#@!in gaming PC with using a phenom II x4. It would be a wise move if you want a nice GPU.
