One source reporting PS4 online will be pay-to-play

    http://www.fudzilla.com/home/item/30...-be-multi-tier

Not sure how reliable this is, obviously, so take it with a grain of salt. I will reiterate that there is no way on earth I will buy a console that is pay-to-play ever. I'll buy and support the WiiU or stick to PC gaming forever if this is true.

It's too big of a selling point to start charging for it. Ps+ will likely continue in some fashion though

I call bull$#@!. There will be subscriptions for sure, but online play will remain free. It's one of those core DNA aspects that just won't be dropped.

This is a strong point for Sony amongst many gamers. We've been seeing the 'many options' service tipped in rumors and articles, and for me this is an inclination that at some level online play will remain free. Sony can work it in and still have a nice profit from the subscriptions.

Though, it's not much of a concern for me as I don't play online much anyways.

p.s. At the very least Sony could just undercut Microsoft in this area to still pull core gamers. If this were to happen I don't see it damning them whatsoever in the long run if they plan it intelligently.

Our sources say that while there will be at least some free level of experience, it is likely to mirror Xbox Live at the Silver level with no online play included, which will be a first for Sony.
Seems more of a guess on the part of the author or the source that the PS4 won't have free online play rather than a source stating it as a fact.

At the very least if their (fudzilla's and the authors David Stellmack) sources are good and accurate the PS4 may cost $399.

If true...I'm cool with it. I'm very curious about the Platinum tier. I wanna know how much it costs and how much I get for that money. Microsoft charged all along and the 360 is still selling boatloads. People said it would hurt MS but that's never materialized now has it?

Maybe Sony realized since the Xbox brand didn't pay a significant price in console sales as a result of paid online, why would it significantly hurt them? Back in the day, my Verizon phone plan made my first incoming minute free at any time. I saved a ton of minutes as a result. Most quick messages can be said in under a minute. After 2 years they took it away. I didn't drop Verizon as a result. Sometimes free things don't stay free forever. It's life!

If this helps Sony financially, I think that's a good thing. They could use the money.

How so? A online fee required for online play would without a doubt be some negative news but it would be far from "bye bye Sony". In fact, it would probably help Sony out more (with making profit) despite the negative news that would come from it.

As unfortunate as it is, consumers have shown they are willing to pay for online play and features with the Xbox 360 and from what we have seen/heard so far the PS4 will at the very least offer a much better service than what the Xbox 360's was.

In all likelihood this is probably just based from someone reading this interview(link posted below) or at least hearing the same thing from someone else. It almost mirrors what was said in the fudzilla article minus the online play fee.

    http://www.videogamer.com/news/sony_..._services.html

The above article states nothing about charging for online play but talks about tier services. The online fee was probably more of an assumption from the author and/or source(for the fudzilla article).

I wouldn't buy one if this is true. I don't game a lot to start with but when I do play I expect to be able to take a game of FIFA or NHL online for free. If this won't be the case I'm done with console gaming forever. I'd get a gaming PC or just game on my iPad and my MacBook Pro.

Ah, thought you were talking about Sony as a company going bye bye or something.

You probably have nothing to worry about though (as far as pay to play goes). The fudzilla rumor is almost identical to what was said in this interview:

    http://www.videogamer.com/news/sony_..._services.html

The only real difference being the pay to play which seems to be more of a assumption rather than based on anything concert from Sony or anyone else. The source (if there was a source) probably heard (or read) the exact same thing that was said in the videogamer.com interview.

Well I hope so but the fact that they've not officially confirmed there will be a free basic online service makes me worried. E3 will tell, I suppose.

FUDzilla... April 1st right around the corner... I'll take it with a huge grain of salt.

Not that it would affect me since I'm mostly a SP campaign player myself but I feel for those who played for free thru this gen if this is true.

    Next Gen top picks:
    PS4: Infamous SS, DriveClub
    One: Project spark, Forza 5
Multi: Watchdogs, The crew, FFXV, KHIII

Well while we're not sure if this is even true, regardless....you know Sony looks at Xbox Live and is envious of the money it's bringing in to Microsoft. As a business... you know they'd like that income too. The trick is if they could get away with it without losing too many customers. Microsoft has and I'm betting Sony could pull it off if their exclusives are too good to pass up.

No way would Sony go down that route as it would piss off far to many of their customers.
