States considering legalizing marijuana and taxing It

    http://www.inquisitr.com/593998/mari...rapped-states/

A marijuana tax is being considered as a reason to legalize the drug by several cash-strapped states, including New York and Maine.

Advocates of marijuana have said that taxing the drug could help pump cash into states struggling to make ends meet. However, skeptics have disagreed.

But some lawmakers agree with advocates. They assert that legalizing marijuana and taxing it would help put a large amount of money into state budgets still recovering from the recession.

Representative Jared Polis (D-CO) agrees. He added, “I’ve seen some estimates in the high tens of millions, as much as $100 million” for Colorado. The state’s voters legalized recreational marijuana during the last election.

Polis and others are arguing for a federal law that legalizes the drug. He added that, should projections be correct, Colorado would be able to fund struggling programs like education. Schools, especially those in poorer districts, are suffering.

Along with Colorado, Washington State voters also passed a recreational marijuana law. Under the law, marijuana would be taxed at four levels: growing, production, retail, and consumer. Growers, manufacturers, and retailers would also have to apply for an annual license to handle the substance. The license costs $1,000.

Dale Geiringer also supports the idea of a marijuana tax. Gieringer, who is the director of California National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, stated that legalizing the drug would bring in more than $1.2 billion to the state. However, the study assumes a traditional sales tax, along with an additional $50 levy for every ounce of marijuana sold.

Skeptics are also cautioning that there is a lot of exaggeration on the part of activists. Harvard economics professor Jeffrey Miron, a pro-legalization scholar at the Cato Institute, cautioned that a marijuana tax “is not a cash cow that can solve anyone’s fiscal problems.” Instead, a nationwide legalization that taxes marijuana like alcohol and tobacco would bring in about $6.4 billion. $4.3 billion would be for the government and states would get $2.1 billion.

Do you think a marijuana tax would be a substantial boon for governments?

I think it's overblown. As far as financials goes, the comments in the last paragraph seem about correct. It would bring in a few billion, which is a drop in the bucket to a country that spends trillions every year.

However, I think there would be other savings not factored in. Money saved in the legal system. Fewer arrests for trivial misdemeanors, fewer court cases, fewer people in jail or on probation. Police would be able to devote more time to more serious crimes which could result in a safer society overall. The savings from that would be difficult to calculate, but I suspect it would be substantial.

However, the healthcare costs would be hard to measure. On one hand you have the possibility of developing new treatments and medicines, on the other hand you could find an increase in other costs such as an increase rate of accidents due to people being too stoned to function properly.

I definitely don't see it as some financial savior for our economic ills. However, I also don't see it as some horrible evil that needs to be demonized. I think that overall, this country as well as several Central American countries would be better off if it were legalized and commercially grown and distributed in the US rather than kept illegal and grown and distributed primarily by South and Central American drug cartels.

Of course they'd only consider legalizing it once money was involved, not simply because having it illegal is a violation of human rights. *rolls eyes*

I guess I'll have to quit smoking weed then because it's no fun if it's legal. It's like alcohol, I was having a blast but once I turned 21 I didn't drink anymore.

Marijuana should be legalized for a bunch of reasons. I like the idea of industries competing with industrial hemp manufacturers. I also like the idea of 80% of the prison population which consists of nonviolent drug offenders being set on the loose because what they did was never technically illegal as prohibition of drugs was never in the constitution from the start. As a matter of delicious irony, I find it rather funny that our founding documents were written on none other than hemp paper made from you guessed it, the hemp plant which marijuana is also a part of. Now, that's what I call munchies of irony.

Do it, tax the hell out of it. Then the state can't complain about being broke anymore.

Focus. Control. Conviction. Resolve. A true ace lacks none of these attributes. Nothing can deter you from the task at hand except your own fears. This is your sky.

It only makes logical sense to legalize it. Alcohol is much worse as far as how dangerous it is. Biggest issue I see with this is testing for driving under the influence. To my knowledge there is no way to test for recent use with marijuana. It has gotten to the point where it is very acceptable unlike in the past. I wonder though even if it is legalized nation wide how drug tests will still stand. I don't think there is anything saying employers can't test for it because it's legal.
