3DS has a second CPU that games can utilize like Resident Evil: Revelations

Exciting times have been had this afternoon as 3DS owners snap up the Resident Evil Revelations and Cooking Mama 4 3DS demos off the European eShop. We just discovered something interesting halfway through our enjoyment of the Resident Evil Revelations demo.

Resident Evil Revelations signs us out of friends. This is similar to what 3DS owners were faced with in both Ocarina of Time 3D and Star Fox 64 3D – users were kicked offline from their friends lists whilst in-game ). So what’s going on?

It was recently revealed that third party developers would be able to make use of 3DS’s second ARM11 CPU – 25% of it in fact. Furthermore, issue 66 (thanks, @Dusty_Knackers!) of the wonderful NGamer magazine revealed to us Pokemon Company head Tsunekazu Ishihara’s knowledge on 3DS’s processor arrangement. 3DS’s second 266mhz ARM11 processor is devoted entirely to background processes and networking – in terms of what the user gets that’d be the home menu, friends list, StreetPass functionality and SpotPass functionality. Hence we can download new Nintendo Video content, be shown as ‘online’ to our friends and more whilst playing 3DS software.

And so our theory is this: Resident Evil Revelations is the first third party game to utilise 3DS’s second CPU, following on from Nintendo’s use of it in Ocarina of Time 3D and Star Fox 64 3D. This is proven by the lack of the same background networking features we saw from those Nintendo releases whilst we were playing Resi – in this case signing us into our 3DS friends list.

This is both good and bad news. The good side of things is that the extra power has probably gone into some positive aspect of the game – possibly the visuals (shadows look softer compared to when we last played the game, for example), or the AI. Or maybe even sound quality, as sound is vastly improved compared with what we’ve heard from Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D. Resident Evil Revelations also makes use of the Circle Pad Pro, which might also bear some extra strain on the one 3DS processor originally allocated in-game.

It’s also bad news, though. We won’t be able to tell for sure until the final release, but if the game signs us out of friends, the lack of friends list functionality whilst outside the home menu could severely hamper online matchmaking. With 25% of 3DS’s second CPU devoted to Resident Evil Revelations rather than keeping us online on our friends list, will we have to resort back to other measures to let friends know we’re ready for a game of Raid Mode?

This is kind of cool but this is the kind of thing we should be trying to get rid of. PS3 had limitations in acquiring all of its resources, they need to start making things that don't have hidden powers...just let it be utilized from the beginning. It's silly that a developer has to go out of its way to utilize it.

This hurts games more than help.

I think this isn't there by design (atleast in 3ds' case) Nintendo probably expected devs to be content with the single CPU power so they originally planned on the second cpu to do other OS stuff like downloads and friend networking etc. but when their hand is pushed into supplying extra power they cut down some features to free some room for more resources like sony had to take away ps3 OS ram (that could have supplied cross game chat) to free more ram for games.

But the meaning is there... Nintendo knew and did not reveal this and therefore, when gently dipping was going to happen, Boom it all comes out in the open so certainly
