Need a little help choosing a video card.

I sort of want to upgrade my PC to give me an option to play some PC games at a respectable detail level. My system specs are not that great, I will list them below.

    CPU - AMD Athlon II X4 640 (Socket AM3 3GHZ)

    GPU - Radeon HD 4650 1GB

    RAM - 5GB DDR3

I was looking at this video card.

a 7850 is not 'respectable', you'll blow most games away with that card

I was hoping to stay around the $200 since this is just to keep my options open when gaming.

Is the card that good? Back in the day (2004-2007) I would drop $500 on a video card every 6 months or so. I figured this card would be just ok since it is only $200

Ah if that's your budget then stick to that. I would recommend the GTX 660TI as that is supposed to be a real good card but that is in the $290 price range. Then again i'm moving away from the Red team and into the Green. Got burned by too many shody drivers and updates from AMD. Just a personal thing though.

that's where it stacks up against the others

i have a 6870 and the 7850 is superior to it

and at 1200p i get 40-60FPS depending on the game and level of aliasing.

Awesome! I think I will stick with the 7850 then, seeing how it fits right in to my upgrade budget. If I was going to be dedicating more time to PC gaming, I would probably just build a new high end PC. I really just want to play Bioshock Infinite on high settings. And this card comes with Tomb Raider and Bioshock Infinite, so it is a win, win!

    Thanks for the help guys!

AMD cards offer great performance (especially on multi monitor) for the cost, as they're normally a bit cheaper. I'm an Nvidia guy myself, but if you're working on a budget I'd agree you should snag an AMD card.

That was my hint, don't look for a gaming specific laptop. Multimedia laptops often offer real good value for money

For that price my computer better be able to run...I don't even know what! But damn it I better get my moneys worth. I don't want to have to replace it for a decade.

Not really "blow away" but yes it will run almost anything quite respectably...especially for the price.
    (I'm running a 7850 )

Lethal if you do get a 7850 give it some time and overclock it. If you want no fuss just use the AMD Catalyst panel, you'll almost assuredly be able to bump the stock clock from 860 to 1050 (maxed out in Catalyst) no problem. Just watch the temps

well, i've never seen my card go above 60fps
cause i run vsync for everything

if a card can reach 30fps+ with high settings im of the inclination for considering it a significant card
1080p, 4xAA (for the most part), 16xAF, Triple buffering and my 6870 does me very fine.
though recently my 1GB vRAM has been limiting me...the upgrade will come soon.

Lethal, i would go Gigabyte if choosing an AMD card, especially with the 7xxx series.
they come factory overclocked and run super cool. you'll almost get stock 7870 performance.

my 6870 has very rarely seen 80C. some members here say their cards are in the 90's

I'm afraid to tell you bro, that even if you buy an enthusiast card, that CPU will hold it back.

Check the graph below. Games performance suffer when you use an old CPU. Probably time to change CPU as well.

I think the firepro is not a gaming card but a work sation card much like the quadro FX.

because 45fps at 1080p is unplayable?

    i make do with a C2Q....

the desire for more fps isn't something i share.
    CPU should be fine.

one of the vendors simply samiched two 7970's together.

AMD only just recently announced it running the battlefield 4 demo if im not mistaken

I know, but to say there isn't one is not an accurately worded statement. Just saying. There isn't one for consumer purchase yet. But yes... the 7990 was running the Battlefield 4 demo.

Click the link. There is no 7990 in the chart of that link. That is what I was pointing out.
Yes the 7990s have existed for many months now.
