An Epic Games exec has compared the PlayStation 4 to "a really perfect gaming PC," citing the console's combination of "phenomenal" hardware and convenient user experience.Speaking to CVG in a recent interview, VP Mark Rein called Sony's decision to incorporate off-the-shelf PC components in PS4 "very smart," because in his opinion it will allow many developers to hit the ground running with their next-gen game development.
He also pointed to the memory limitations of the 32-bit versions of Windows as an example of how PS4 titles could even surpass what "most PCs" can do.
"I think it's a very smart move on Sony's behalf to build this sort of enhanced PC architecture and then put so much in it," he said.
"Let's not forget it has 16 times the memory we had in PlayStation 3 - that's not insignificant. Knowing that every machine has that... we can do crazy, ridiculous stuff with that.
"The other exciting thing is that... when you think about Windows, even Windows for most people is tied to about 2GB of addressable memory space. This really opens up beyond what most PCs can do, because most PCs are running a 32-bit version of Windows.
"It's like giving you the world's best PC," he added, pointing to Sony's introduction of "super convenient" features such as the ability to play games while they're downloading and perform background updates.
"The kind of stuff that they announced that they're doing, the level of convenience and things like that... they're making a really perfect gaming PC," he added.
"I've always said that the things in the next-generation that aren't just brute force hardware are all about the service and simplicity of the experience - the things that make it as fun and easy to get a PS4 game as it is to get a game on your iPad."
Commenting on Microsoft's next-gen console plans, Rein said he was confident the Xbox firm will also be doing something 'along the lines' of PS4.
At GDC Epic released an extended video of its Unreal Engine 4 'Elemental' demorunning on PS4.

He is right in that most PCs (that includes all the older PCs still around) are running 32-bit OS and/or games stuck to the effectively 2GB Windows 32-bit .Net framework limit. With PS4/Xbox 720 .....64-bit CPU + 64-bit OS + 8GB RAM = Much more possibilities and potential then the average PC.

We only know a small hint of what the PS4 is offering and it's already incredible. Next gen is going to be a stunner.

Always did like Epic. They did a lot of things in UT2K7 for PS3 that to this day not a lot of developers have done. They will always have my respect as a developer that looks at the functions and boundaries of a machine and go outside the box with it.
It all makes sense now.. After all, the machine is hyped as "The next water cooler" and the fans of this water cooler just love to talk about bottom lines, publishers profit margins and stock prices. The world has become one giant office and I must be the guy they're all saying needs to grow up because I still like having fun.

As a longtime Unreal fan (if it was a few years ago and I was still competitive i would challenge anyone to a instagib game) it pains me to say it but I'd rather them not make another UT simply because they fucked up UT3 so bad that it didn't even feel like UT. Even 2004 was better than it and that, in UT circles, was a step back.
UT needs to be a fast paced game, not the slow gameplay it had in UT3.
Now a new Bulletstorm would have me intrigued

Agreed. Though I enjoyed ut3 (and adored the fact that it had splitscreen, mods, and kbm support) 2k4 is the better game hands down.
yes, but with mutators you could speed it up and you could play with keyboard and mouse anyway. BoyBettaKnow, if you didn't know this, you should try it out. the mutator is called speedfreak (i think it was included in a patch?) it should be pretty cheap now.
The idea of a new UT on ps4 with keyboard and mouse support, cross play with pc, and mod support without the need for "cooking" makes me want to throw my entire wallet at the screen

Quake was fast on consoles and other arena shooters like Timesplitters have been very fast so I don't think that's a great excuse. UT3 was just a pretty bad game. Epic are one of those many developers who make a hit game first try and then never get anywhere near it in subsequent years.

It didn't feel as fast to me. It seemed clunky if you know what I mean?
It was pretty much all I played. CTF (with occasional assault and death match) with Instagibs for many, many years!
@Mini E - I never had it on the PS3 it was the PC version I played

I said this at the reveal, the PS4 is like Windows that has been built just for hardcore gamers.

See now more developers are saying it. Optimization is going to be a huge thing with consoles as a competitive edge to PC gaming. People keep comparing the top tier PC rigs without realizing that that's fraction of what PCs are actually out there.
PS4 isn't in competition with that 1% of the PC hardware, it's in competition with the other 99.
